Elon Musk’s 2022 year was very memorable. Elon Musk became Twitter’s new owner, but also lost his title as the “world’s wealthiest man”. “Insider” looks back on some of his most controversial comments during the second half.

Elon Musk had a very busy year in 2022. He entered the year as the world’s wealthiest man. He had lost billions and the trust of many who had invested in his companies by the end.

Tesla investors were particularly worried after the billionaire bought Twitter on October 27. Many feared he was neglecting Tesla in favor of fixing social-media platforms.

Analysts also pointed out that Musk is distracted by Twitter and claim his politicized tweets are causing damage to Tesla’s brand.

The billionaire, who was the first to lose $200 billion, has never shied away form controversy and tweets his views on many topics.

Let’s take a look at 20 of Musk’s most memorable statements between June and December.

1. Life on Mars

Musk wrote on July 6: “Humanity will reach Mars within your lifetime,”

He has made it clear that he wants to colonize the red planet, and SpaceX is his first step towards that goal.

Musk stated that he hopes to build 1,000 Starships in 10 years.

Musk’s original goal was to launch three Starships per hour and make it possible for anyone to travel to Mars. Musk wrote that “needs to be such, anyone can go if he or she wants, with loans available for people who don’t have the money.”

2. There are not enough babies on Earth

Musk indicated his intent to address “the underpopulation crises.” Musk joked that he used his Mars exploration plans as a justification for the number of children he has.

Musk has nine children, and he often expresses concern about underpopulation. Musk once stated to The Wall Street Journal’s annual CEO Council that rapidly falling birth rates were “one of our greatest risks to civilization.”

The billionaire says that a collapsed birth rate is the greatest danger humanity faces. He is therefore “doing my best” to address the underpopulation crisis.

Musk stated in late August that low birth rates were “a much greater risk to civilization than global heating.”

3. Sleep expert

This tech mogul is passionate about all things electric vehicles, rocket building and neuroscience. He also loves free speech. He is also interested in sleep management.

Musk gave his followers some tips, and YouTuber Mr. Beast wrote: “Anyone want me to explain why these two things are so helpful?” Musk replied, “Good chance that you are experiencing mild acid reflux at night. It affects quality sleep without consciousness awareness.”

Musk may have had new slogans in mind for SpaceX and Tesla, which would make it appear that he was a prolific entrepreneur.

The billionaire stated that Tesla was to preserve life on Earth and SpaceX is to extend it.

This sounded familiar, and was similar to what Buzz Lightyear would call “To Infinity and Beyond.”

5. Keep his head down

The billionaire is open to expressing his opinions on all topics, even the criticisms he draws. He wrote, “The amount and quality of attention that I have attracted has gone supernova,”

He said, “Unfortunately even trivial articles about my life generate a lot clicks.” “Will do my best to keep my head down and be focused on useful things for humanity.”

Musk is not a fan media. Musk has also criticized “corporate journalism”, accusing it of not being with the “people” in relation to the Twitter Files.

Musk is doubling his support for citizen journalism, rather than large publications.

Musk, like many public figures, has critics and fans.

Musk isn’t afraid to scare. Musk is a successful entrepreneur who attracts detractors.

Musk doesn’t hesitate to respond when he is attacked online. This was also the case for Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez, a lawmaker who claimed that she was having problems with her Twitter account following a spat between Musk and her.

Jokingly, the billionaire replied that it was due “a naked abuses of power” by his new owner, himself.

7. Twizzler

He was in the middle of a legal dispute with Twitter, after trying to walk away from a $44 Billion takeover deal. But that didn’t stop him laughing about it.

Musk, who enjoys “little nonsense,” stated that combining Tesla and Twitter would result in “Twizzler.”

8. Losing weight fast

Musk stated that he used flights as an opportunity for him to fast, before revealing on August 29th that he had lost 20 pounds by intermittent fasting. Musk also stated that he used Zero, a weight loss app. He then responded to a tweet from a user asking if he lifts any weights.

9. Keep the peace

He polled his Twitter followers, asking questions about the war in Ukraine.

A Ukrainian diplomat attacked the billionaire over his plan for peace, with Andrij Melnyk, Ukraine’s ambassador, saying, “Fuck off is what my very diplomatic response to you.”

Musk stated that Musk believed “this is highly probable to be the outcome at the end – it’s just a matter of how many people die before then.”

10. Musk’s real plan for Twitter

Musk had just announced that acquiring Twitter would be the first step towards X, the “all-in” app, a few weeks prior to the $44 billion deal to acquire it.

Musk previously mentioned X.com as a potential Twitter competitor. Musk tweeted “X.com” in August to answer a question about whether he would launch his own website instead of buying Twitter.

Musk founded X.com in 1999 as an online bank. Later, the company merged with an online payment system to become PayPal. Musk purchased the domain name in 2017 and relaunched it.

Musk stated at the time that he didn’t have any plans for the site, but that the domain held “great sentimental significance” for him. The website currently displays a small “x” if it is launched.

11. Heaven fragrance

Musk decided to launch his own fragrance, as if he didn’t have enough distractions.

Then he joked that he needed people who would buy his perfume to close the Twitter deal. He then said, “Please buy my perfume so I can purchase Twitter,” before replying “srslyly” to the user who shared a meme.

Musk claimed that he sold 10,000 bottles and couldn’t wait to “read media stories tomorrow about $1M Burnt Hair.”

12. Comedy club

Musk is controversial at times, but he prefers humor and doesn’t take things at face value. Or so he wants us believe.

After becoming the new Twitter owner, he said that comedy is legal.

13. Activist woes

Concerned by the rise of extremism, hate speech and hate speech, #StopToxicTwitter coalition, an alliance of advocacy groups and media watchdogs, asked major Twitter advertisers to press Musk to accept content moderation or to boycott the platform.

Musk blamed Twitter’s loss of money on activists. Musk stated that Twitter had suffered a significant drop in its revenue due to activists pressuring advertisers. “Think about it: Twitter has had a huge drop in revenue, even though content moderation has not changed and we did everything possible to appease them.”

Musk shared a meme that featured a picture of a Nazi soldier on November 7. Musk wrote, “How times have changed,” in a tweet.

Photoshop was used to add a notification icon above the cage of messenger peons on the soldier’s back. It had the caption: “3 unread mails.”

Musk wrote “Back when birds existed” in a follow up tweet. He then added additional commentary and a head-exploding emoticon.

15. There will be mistakes

Musk is not known for admitting fault, but Musk has admitted that Twitter changes would not be very sensible.

After having made a few adjustments to Twitter’s platform, he wrote that “Twitter will do many dumb things in the coming months.” “We will keep the good stuff and change the bad.”

Musk was attracted to two men who tricked the media into believing they were Twitter engineers laid off.

Insider’s Kali Hays reported that one of them is now working there. Daniel Francis is now listed as an internal member of Twitter staff. He is also available via Slack.

Musk surveyed Twitter users to find out if he should reinstate President Donald Trump on the social media platform.

Musk declared that 51.8% of voters voted for the former president’s reinstatement. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi Vox Dei” Musk wrote using a Latin phrase which translates to “the Voice of the People is the Voice of God”.

18. Beside manner

A bedside table usually has an alarm clock and a lamp.

According to Musk’s November tweet, Musk’s version of it includes none of these.

The photo featured four coffee-free-Coke and two guns. It also included a photograph of George Washington.

He shared another picture of his bedside table in December. This time, he was showing off an American Constitution and other books about America’s founding.

19. Twitter Files

Musk teased and then published the Twitter Files. This focused on “free speech suppression” by social-media platforms before Musk acquired them.

Since then, he has entrusted some independent journalists with releasing parts of it. Kali Hays of Insider previously reported that journalists Matt Taibbi (who’ve been working on Twitter Files) were granted access to Twitter’s internal systems, despite not having an official position at the company.

20. The best decision you have made yet

Musk has come under intense scrutiny since Twitter acquired him. In December, he polled his users to find out if he should resign as CEO.

57% of 17,502,391 respondents voted for the billionaire’s retirement.

Musk replied to the tweet with “I will resign from my position as CEO when I find someone foolish enough for the job!” “After that, I will only run the software and servers teams.”
