- Twitter users were temporarily unable to tweet, send a direct message or use any other features on Wednesday.
- Elon Musk sent an email to his staff, asking them to "pause the testing of new features."
- The outage was described by some as "massive" but was still not resolved as of Wednesday afternoon.
Twitter suffered one of its worst outages in history, following months of cost cutting efforts and tortured testing by Elon Musk.
Many users lost the ability to tweet, retweet or quote tweets, which are all core functions of Twitter, on Wednesday. Although the platform's website and app functioned as before, users were able to scroll through previously published content. However, some users found it difficult or impossible to interact with that content on mobile or desktop.
In private messages, a former employee of Twitter described the situation as "a huge outage" in messages that were seen by Insider. A current employee of a major tech company complained that their corporate Twitter accounts weren't working and said "this is a huge issue."
Users realized that they couldn't tweet or retweet because of a message that appeared when trying to do so. The message said, "You have exceeded the daily limit for tweeting." Direct messages were just deleted with the tab showing "something went wrong".
Musk has been trying to make Twitter more profitable by monetizing elements that were long free. These error messages on Wednesday could have been a test or a sign that Musk is trying to make Twitter more profitable.
According to a source familiar with the company, it was difficult for the company to pinpoint the root cause of the problem and correct any resulting problems. Many users were able to tweet and like again by Wednesday afternoon Pacific Time. However, the ability for direct messages and retweets was not yet available. Twitter's Support account tweeted that the platform was "not working as expected for some users." We are sorry for the inconvenience. We are aware of the problem and are working to fix it."
According to one person who received the email, Musk sent a short email to Twitter staff instructing them to "pause development of new features" to maintain "system stability and robustness." Fortune reported the Musk message earlier Wednesday. An email to the company representative asking for comment was not answered.
Twitter has seen more issues with functionality and glitches, which is a result of Musk's drastic cost cutting and massive layoffs. According to Apptopia data and company disclosures, Twitter now has fewer employees than it did ten years ago. However, its users have increased from 200 million per monthly to approximately 250 million per day in that time period.
Insider was previously informed by a former Twitter executive that Twitter would likely degrade over time and not just implode at once. The most likely scenario is that there's a major feature breakdown for all users. The executive stated that it would not be discovered until too late and it would be difficult to determine the cause and how to fix it if there were no people with the necessary skills."
Insider reported that Musk's demands for rapid changes are a source of problems. The testing of new features and altered features is occurring at an alarming rate, with so few employees and on such a large scale that problems are not being identified immediately. Andreessen Horowitz's VC firm spent $400 million to help Musk takeover Twitter. He is now frustrated by the platform's decline and has written directly to Musk.
Two people familiar with the company claim that certain planned changes to Twitter may have caused the outages. Musk declared Wednesday that he would no longer allow developers to access Twitter's API. This has enabled millions of people to use automated accounts and other services on Twitter over the years. An account that displays the year's progression as a bar graph, to TweetDeck which is an organizational tool that was created using access to the API Twitter acquired. TweetDeck and many other automated accounts that did not pay Musk for API access stopped working on Wednesday.
Twitter Blue subscribers also have the option to tweet up to 4,000 characters per hour on Wednesday, according to Twitter.
