- Elon Musk declared Wednesday that Tesla will expand its California engineering headquarters.
- Hewlett Packard's Palo Alto office will be taken over by the company.
- Tesla relocated its headquarters to Texas in 2021. However, thousands of Californian workers remain employed by Tesla.
Elon Musk made the announcement during a press conference with California Governor. Gavin Newsom announced that Elon Musk plans to expand his engineering headquarters in California.
According to Tesla CEO, the company will be moving into Palo Alto office space that was previously occupied in Hewlett Packard. According to him, the company will be able to focus more on its plans for autonomous and robotic driving. CNBC reported that the site was dubbed "HQ2", citing sources familiar.
Musk described the move as a "poetic transformation from the company that created Silicon Valley to Tesla." According to Reuters, the electric-car maker signed a lease for half of HP's office space in 2021.
Newsom stated, "I couldn’t be more proud about California’s commitment to supporting Tesla," adding that he has worked for Musk for decades and even purchased one of Tesla's first Roadsters.
This announcement comes less two years after Musk relocated Tesla's headquarters from Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas. The billionaire stated that he had moved Tesla's headquarters to Austin, Texas because it was becoming more difficult for employees to buy houses in the Bay Area. However, he indicated that Tesla would continue to expand its presence here in California.
In the past, Musk and Newsom were at odds. The billionaire threatened to take Tesla's entire operations out of California in 2020 because he didn't like the state's response, including the shelter-in-place orders.
A series of regulatory investigations have been launched by the state to investigate Tesla's treatment of workers and its marketing of self-driving tech. A California regulator sued Tesla last year for racial discrimination at Fremont Factory, based on "hundreds" of worker complaints. The California Department of Motor Vehicles also accused Tesla of deliberately misleading customers with its advertising for Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features.
The carmaker moved to Texas but continued to make many cars at Fremont's Factory, California. It also maintains its old headquarters in Palo Alto. Tesla has approximately 47,000 employees in California as of January.
Insider reached out to Musk and Tesla spokespersons but they did not respond.
