The cost of Tesla’s Wireless Charging platform is $300 According to Tesla, shipping will start in February.
Tesla announced that pre-orders are now open for the $300 wireless charging mat. The mat can charge up three devices simultaneously. In 2019, Apple cancelled AirPower, its own wireless charging mat.
The Wireless Charging Platform by Tesla, a $300 mat that can charge up to three devices simultaneously, has been unveiled. The mat can charge up to three Qi-enabled wireless devices simultaneously, including an iPhone, Android or pair of AirPods, with up to 15W.
Tesla’s website states that pre-orders are open for the mat and shipping will commence in February 2023.
Although it may seem like a trivial offering by Tesla, a charging mat is likely to be part of its larger product strategy. In the past, the company has offered products such as tequila or a phone charger. Tesla claimed that the mat’s design is inspired by its forthcoming Cybertruck.
Apple pulled plans to make a similar product, AirPower, in 2019 after it was found not to be compliant with company standards.
AirPower, like Tesla’s charging mat was made to charge three items at once. This includes wearables which don’t typically support Qi (an inductive method of wireless charging). The Verge reported that Tesla’s Wireless Charging Platform doesn’t work with the Apple Watch.
Apple’s AirPower mat was thrown out in 2019.
Apple’s senior vice-president of hardware engineering Dan Riccio stated in a statement to Insider 2019: “We believe that the future will be wireless and we are committed to pushing the wireless experience forward. Although Apple has delayed products not up to its standards, full-on cancellations are rare in Apple’s history.
Insider reported at the time that John Gruber, a well-connected Apple blogger, speculated that the multi-coil design of the device was getting “too hot”. TechCrunch reported the coils had overheated because they were too close together and required “very, very careful power management.”
Tesla’s mat is equipped with 30 Qi charging coils, all designed by FreePower. This technology was developed in tandem with another AirPower competitor back at 2020.
The MagSafe charger is Apple’s closest product to the original vision. It charges phones using magnets, starting at the iPhone 12 and higher.
