- Two reports have been made to the NHTSA about the steering wheel of the Model Y 2023 that fell off.
- According to the agency, the probe involves more than 120,000 Tesla cars.
- A Tesla owner claimed that his steering wheel broke while he was driving along the highway in January.
On Wednesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that it was investigating reports that Tesla's Model Y's steering wheel could fall off while the SUV has been in use.
According to the NHTSA, the inquiry includes more than 120,000 Model Y vehicles built after 2023. After receiving two reports that the steering wheel of a vehicle was falling apart while the driver was driving, the agency launched the investigation. The agency stated that both cars had low mileage and the bolt that attaches to the steering column was missing in both cases. According to the NHTSA, there have been no fatalities or crashes related to this issue.
The agency is investigating the frequency of the alleged problem and the potential impact on Tesla's manufacturing process. A recall could be possible after the preliminary investigation.
Insider reached out to Tesla for clarification but they did not respond.
Prerak Patel was one of the drivers who were involved in the steering wheel incident. He told Insider that the NHTSA reached him after he had posted on Twitter about his steering wheel breaking while he was driving along the highway in January. This post received over 2.4 million hits.

Insider previously reported that the driver's steering wheel had been damaged only five days after his Model Y arrived earlier in the year. Patel claimed that he was driving along a highway in New Jersey near Woodbridge Mall with his wife, children and other family members when the accident occurred.
Patel said that he was driving at a normal speed in left lane and suddenly had a loose wheel in his hand. "By the grace and power of God, nobody was behind me. I stepped off the pedal and was able pull the car over to the divider.
Insider Tesla allowed Patel to return the car for the original purchase price. He also received expedited delivery on a Model Y. Patel stated that he was uncomfortable driving the defective vehicle even though the bolt on the steering wheel had been replaced.
