- In recent months, controversy has erupted over Elon Musk's Twitter Blue $8 monthly subscription.
- Merriam-Webster mocked Twitter Blue by releasing its "Merriam Webster Red"
- It joked that this service would only be available to subscribers.
Merriam-Webster poked fun at Elon Musk’s Twitter Blue service Tuesday by tweeting about its parody subscription service.
It said in a post that it had been viewed more than 2.5 million times: "People who subscribe Merriam-Webster Red(tm), will have exclusive access to the true definitions."
Two hours later, the oldest dictionary publisher in the country announced that its joke subscription service was being discontinued.
It added, "It was brought to our attention that since 1828 we have been giving everyone the true definitions."
Musk launched Twitter Blue in November. Musk said that users could keep their blue checkmark and edit tweets. They would also be able to see fewer ads and have priority when searching. Some celebrities have criticized the new charge.
Merriam-Webster's tweets were triggered by the news that only paid subscribers to Twitter Blue can vote in polls and appear in its "For You” tab. Musk responded to backlash by clarifying that users will still have access to accounts in the "For You” feed.
Merriam-Webster's Twitter account was also a hit with some of the responses. One user asked about a professional service and it replied "Looking into" – Musk's favorite phrase since he took over Twitter. This was in response to right-wing journalists complaining that tweet visibility was a problem.
Merriam-Webster is known for mocking comments made on social media, including trolling the Trump administration.
Insider reached out to Twitter for comment. The company replied with an automated message, but didn't address the question.
Merriam-Webster didn't immediately respond to Insider’s request for clarification, which was sent outside of US working hours.
