- Igor Babuschkin, Elon Musk’s new AI researcher, was arrested in March for domestic violence.
- Musk is said to have hired Babuschkin to create a rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
- Insider reported that Twitter hired Babuschkin as senior director for engineering.
Igor Babuschkin was arrested by Palo Alto police in March for what they called a "domestic violence incident."
Babuschkin, a resident of Palo Alto, was arrested by Palo Alto Police on March 6, after they responded to a complaint. They determined that there had been a domestic violence misdemeanor, confirmed Lieutenant Brian Philip, Palo Alto Police Department.
Philip confirmed that Babuschkin had been released the same night after posting bond of $10,000. The Information, a tech news website, was the first to report on the arrest.
Philip said that the case was about "a minor injury" but it did not pose any other threat to public security. He refused to give details of the incident because the case was confidential.
According to a police log posted on the Palo Alto Police Department website last month, Babuschkin had been arrested at 588 Webster Street.
Cynthia Sumida told Insider that the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office decided not to file formal charges against Babuschkin after the arrest.
Babuschkin didn't respond to Insiders requests for comments via phone or email. Musk didn't respond to Insiders requests for comment sent via email to his Tesla or SpaceX addresses. A poop-emoji auto response was sent in response to an email sent to Twitter’s press address.
Insider's Kali Hays reported that Babuschkin left DeepMind (Google's AI company) and joined Twitter as a senior director of engineering. Babuschkin told The Information that Musk had discussed the creation of a chatbot with "responses more reliable and trustworthy" in February.
Musk, who criticized the idea of "training AI so that it is woke," reportedly developed his own AI startup and recently incorporated X.AI Corp. according to WSJ. Insider reported that Musk had also enlisted resources, including 10,000 graphics processor units, to implement his AI plans.
