Twitter acknowledged weeks after the incident that some tweets sent to users' private Twitter Circles were made public by a bug.
Twitter users who were affected received an email on Friday from the platform informing them that their semi-private Tweets had been seen by people other than their close friends within their Twitter Circle.
The email obtained by Fortune stated that "In April 2023 a security issue may have allowed users who were not in your Twitter Circle, to view tweets you should have been able to post only to Circles to which you posted."
The message continued: "Our security team immediately identified this issue and fixed it so that these Tweets were no longer seen outside of your Circle."
Twitter Circle can be described as a group of Twitter users with whom a user shares tweets that are not meant for the world to see. Users can create and curate a Twitter Circle list according to their preferences.
In April, however, users began reporting glitches. One user confirmed in a test Twitter that someone who wasn't in his Twitter Circle could see a Tweet he sent to his list of personal followers.

Twitter sent an email to those affected one month after the experiment. The message acknowledged the incident, and assured them that the security team had fixed the problem. Unknown is how many users the bug affected.
In an email sent to users, Twitter said: "We are committed to protecting your privacy and understand the risks of such an incident. We deeply regret what happened."
