Microsoft's CEO has reacted to Elon Musk's criticisms of the company's multi-billion dollar partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI.
Satya Nadella answered a question from CNBC on Tuesday about Musk's claim of Microsoft controlling OpenAI.
Nadella stated, "I have great respect for Elon's work and everything he does." "I'd just say that isn't factually correct."
He added, "Last time I checked, I think we're the only for profit company who is happy to have a nonprofit controlling technology and a board of directors." I welcome other companies to follow suit.
OpenAI announced in 2019 that it would no longer be a nonprofit and become a "capped-profit", a hybrid between a for-profit and a nonprofit.
Musk founded OpenAI in 2015 with CEO Sam Altman, among others. He left the board of directors in 2018 citing possible conflicts of interest. Since then, he's become a vocal opponent of OpenAI.
He said in February that it was now a "maximum-profit company controlled by Microsoft," and this "was not what I had intended." Musk reaffirmed his claim in an April interview with Tucker Carlson, saying that "Microsoft has a strong voice, if it does not control OpenAI directly at this point."
Musk also stated that he would like to build "TruthGPT", a rival to ChatGPT, which he refers to as "a maximum truth-seeking AI" that attempts to understand the nature and origin of the universe.
