- Ford is trying to take on Tesla, which currently dominates the electric vehicle industry.
- Two competitors announced on Thursday a surprise collaboration.
- Ford EV owners will be able to access more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in Spring 2024.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced to Ford CEO Jim Farley in an interview that his company would be giving Ford access by next year to its supercharger networks.
Musk and Farley announced the news during a Twitter interview that was audio only. They discussed how to bring about the next phase in electric vehicle adoption.
Musk stated that the move was to "equalize" Ford, a fierce competitor of Tesla in the EV race.
Ford announced on Thursday that under the terms of this partnership, Ford's electric vehicles will be able charge at 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America starting next year. Ford says that the "BlueOval Charge Network", a network of charging stations, also includes fast-charging capabilities.
According to the Department of Energy, Tesla has over 20,700 Supercharging Plugs in North America.
Jim Farley told Tesla cofounder Elon Musk, during a Twitter Spaces event they hosted Thursday evening, "We are really excited about working with you in order to improve the lives of our customers." "And we're very grateful for your partnership."
Musk stated that the charging rate for Ford vehicles will depend on the "physical limit of the wiring" and not adapters.
Musk stated that "it is Tesla's intention to make it a seamless, positive experience for Ford Owners."
Tesla is the leader in the EV market, but other carmakers are catching up. According to an Experian report for 2022, Tesla had 65.4% market share in EVs — down from 68.2% and 79.4% respectively in 2021 and 2020 — while other carmakers like Honda and BMW continue to dig in.
The charging network of Tesla is one of the main reasons people choose to buy its cars. It is a network that has been exclusive in the past, it's extensive, easy to use and well-known for its reliability. Owners of other EVs, on the other hand, rely on a patchwork charging provider network when they are out and about. This is changing. Tesla had opened up a large number of chargers for owners of EVs from other brands in Europe before Thursday's announcement. A similar pilot program was also started in the US.
