- Elon Musk granted Walter Isaacson complete access to his new biography.
- Recent history shows that this is a huge mistake by Musk.
- It's good news for readers!
I am a journalist. I believe CEOs, politicians and other leaders in my field should always grant access requests.
It is a fact that granting so much access for so long has led to many disasters.
Tim Alberta's brutal and new profile of CNN chief Chris Licht in The Atlantic this week brought that to our attention.
The story claims that Licht conducted countless hours of interviews on record with Alberta in the fall of 2022 and throughout the winter and spring.
Licht took Alberta on a train ride. He took him to the CNN town hall. He took him to the gym. The story goes on. Some media executives are now wondering whether Licht will be able to keep his job.
It can be brutal to subjects when they are given total access over a long time period, because the story changes.
Michael Eisner allowed James Stewart to write "DisneyWar", a great nonfiction book about business that began as a report on Eisner's leadership but ended up being a narrative about a war proxy that led his ouster.
Rupert Murdoch and John DeLorean regret giving access to all. Richard Branson, Dick Fuld Rudi Giuliani Nikki Haley are also among those who have regretted it.
Steve Jobs's decision to let Walter Isaacson in his life was another famous example. Jobs died before his book was published, but many of Jobs's co-workers say that he would regret the outcome.
This leads me to a really exciting thing that is coming up for you readers: Walter Isaacson’s forthcoming biography on Elon Musk.
According to the Amazon description, Isaacson spent two years shadowing Musk. He attended his meetings and walked through his factories, as well as interviewed him and his family, coworkers and enemies. The inside story is filled with incredible tales of triumphs, and turmoil. It addresses the question, "Are the demons driving Musk what it takes to fuel innovation and progress?"
Two years?
Adversaries?
Demons?
Musk, beware!
"HTM0_ It is a trap!"
