- In response, Meta's founder requested a venue for the fight on Instagram.
- Sportsbooks quickly created betting odds for a possible fight between tech CEOs.
Who would have the better chance of winning a physical fight between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg?
According to the odds published Thursday by sportsbooks, it depends on whom you ask.
You don't get to see two of the richest men in the entire world posing over a hypothetical conflict. But that is what happened last week, after Elon Musk tweeted some figurative jabs towards Mark Zuckerberg.
Musk responded to a tweeter who had jokingly made a joke about Zuckerberg's interest in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Kurz after, Zuckerberg borrowed a playbook from former UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov and posted on Instagram that he agreed in principle. He asked Musk to "send location."
Oddsmakers have rushed to put out betting lines on a cagefight between Musk and Zuckerberg — who are both 39 years old.
DraftKings is one of the most recognizable US sportsbooks. They have listed potential odds for Zuckerberg at -160. This means that you'd need to wager $160 to win $100 on Meta CEO. Musk, on the other hand, was listed as an underdog at +140, which means that a $100 wager on Twitter's ex-CEO to win would result in $140.
In a press release, Johnny Avello said that "Zuckerberg, who is 12 years older, has completed an intense challenge where he ran a half-mile, performed 100 pull-ups (with weights), 200 push-ups (with weights) and 300 squats before running a final mile while wearing a 9kg vest."
Bovada is another online sportsbook that offers similar odds, but in reverse. Musk is the -150 underdog in this prediction. This means that you have to wager $150 to win $100. Zuckerberg, on the other hand, is a +110 favorite.
Bovada's spokesperson told Insider that while Zuck may have the BJJ experience, in the ring they would likely favor Musk. Musk is the "literal heavyweight" of the two. Musk is the -150 favourite. Musk might have the height advantage and outlast Zuck, but his reach and training are on his side.
The spokesperson explained that for a player expects to make money on -150 wagers, they would need to bet more than 60% of time. "For +110, that number is 47.62%. The additional 7.62% above 100% represents the house holding or margin on market – the percentage of money wagered by the house to expect to win when all dollars are wagered equally relative to the payout prices. "
Meta representatives didn't immediately respond to Insider’s request for a comment. However, they had previously said that Zuckerberg's reply to Musk spoke volumes.
The UFC president Dana White told TMZ Sports, "If they are serious and really want to bet, then he will set up a pay per view event for this bout."
