Being a 3rd-generation Floridian, I made the decision to leave the state at 18 and have no intentions of returning, especially now that I have children.
Family Considerations
While there are aspects of Florida that I hold dear, I ultimately felt that it wasn't the ideal state for my family. My parents and grandparents hail from South Florida, as do I, but I opted to depart at the age of 18. The high hurricane risk prevalent in the state is a primary concern for me, particularly with children in the picture.
Education System Misalignment
Another factor contributing to my choice is the disparity between my views on education and those upheld by the state of Florida. The recent expansion of the universal school voucher system to encompass all students raises issues for me. The potential consequences of diverting state funds from public schools to private institutions that accept vouchers are troubling. Moreover, the trend of banning books, particularly those featuring LGBTQ+ content, contradicts my belief in fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
Weather Preferences
One of the reasons I opted to relocate was my appreciation for experiencing distinct seasons. Growing up in South Florida, where summers are a near-constant presence, I longed for the variety that states like Colorado offer. The transition from winter chill to summer warmth and the changing landscapes of fall and spring resonate with me on a personal level.
Hurricane Concerns
Florida's susceptibility to hurricanes, exacerbated by the climate crisis, poses a significant threat. Rising sea levels and warmer ocean temperatures contribute to more intense and destructive storms, prolonging recovery periods. Witnessing the impact of Hurricane Irma on my father's home in the Keys reaffirmed my reluctance to subject my family to the annual risk of devastation.
Final Thoughts
While I cherish my memories of Florida, particularly its picturesque beaches, my decision to depart was rooted in ensuring the best possible environment for my children. Despite the allure of the state for many, my divergent views on education and concerns over climate-related risks solidify my resolve to remain elsewhere. Visiting Florida allows me to relive cherished moments, but the peace of mind I have in my current location is invaluable.
