- Tesla's lineup of models and Autopilot are just a few examples of the innovative products and features that Tesla has developed.
- Tesla faces competition from other electric car startups.
- Future products of the company include an 18 wheeler, a pick-up truck, and a robot humanoid.
Tesla, Elon Musk’s electric car company, has experienced highs and lows since its founding in 2003. Tesla has been a leader in electric cars and the world's most valuable automaker for the past decade.
Tesla Employees
Tesla CEO Elon Elon Musk led the company in outperforming traditional automakers for the past few years.
The carmaker's economic challenges are not immune. Tesla has experienced periods of rapid growth, and five rounds Tesla layoffs over the last six year.
Musk is also very critical of working from home. Starting in summer 2022, the Tesla WFH Policy will be all but killed, with Musk telling the executive staff to either return to work or resign.
Musk officially moved Tesla's headquarters from California to Austin in Texas, Texas, in December 2021. It still employs thousands in California. Musk announced that the company will move into an office in Palo Alto, which was previously occupied Hewlett-Packard.
Tesla has six gigafactories where it manufactures electric vehicles and batteries in the US, Europe and Asia. Elon Musk said at Tesla's annual meeting in 2022 that he wants to build 10-12 additional gigafactories over the next few years. The company's production capabilities would be boosted by expanding the Tesla Gigafactory.
Stock TSLA
Tesla's stock was essentially flat after its IPO in 2010. Motor Trend's Car of the year for 2013 was the Model S. Tesla's stock price soared at that time. If you had bought Tesla stock after the IPO, and stayed with it for a few years, you would have a return of 1,000% or more today.
Tesla's revenue in 2017 was $81.5 billion, placing it 50th on the Fortune 500. Its revenues are largely derived from the sale of electric vehicles. However, 17.5% of the company's revenue came from selling energy products and regulatory credits.
Recent investors have been concerned most about price reductions and margins. Tesla's latest earnings call revealed that revenue grew 47% to $24.93 Billion.
Musk said that the company's current priority is to focus on growth, rather than profit, and that the company is currently navigating an "uncertain" macro-environment.
Musk told analysts that it was better to ship many cars with a low margin, and then harvest this margin later as we perfected autonomy.
Tesla Products
Model 3 is the least expensive Tesla model. Model Y and Model S are next. The models' names spell out "S3XY." Musk is known for his juvenile humor.
Model 3 and Model S sedans are available, while Model Y and Model X SUVs are also available. The cars range in price from $40,240 up to $108,490. Tesla is known to have fluctuating prices because it sells directly to consumers.
Tesla Model 3 entry-level cost fluctuates a lot. The starting price of the Tesla Model 3 is currently $40,240. All Model 3 models are eligible for an $7,500 federal credit.
Tesla's Model S is a luxury sedan for families. It's the oldest vehicle that's still being produced by the EV manufacturer. Tesla's Model S is the oldest vehicle still in production. It costs almost $90,000. Tesla says it is the aerodynamically most efficient production car. Tesla delivered its first Model S in June 2012 to a customer.
Model 3 is more affordable for buyers comparing Tesla Model 3 to Model S. Model S is a luxury car with better performance and more space for drivers who want to spend a lot of money.
Model X is the largest and most expensive SUV that Tesla offers to drivers. It starts at $98,490 and comes with five seats. You can upgrade to a third row for six or seven seats by paying extra. The Model X has falcon-winged rear doors that swing up, not out. It looks like a spaceship.
Model Y is Tesla's small SUV. It is also one of the cheaper Tesla models, along with the Model 3 sedan. Recently, it became the most popular vehicle in the entire world.
Electric Vehicles
Tesla's app and keycard are features you would expect in a modern electric vehicle. Musk's sense of humor has also contributed to Tesla's growing cult. Autopilot is a popular feature, but the cars are equipped with several others, such as "Dog Mode," "Frunk Mode," and "Ludicrous Plus Mode."
The automaker introduced minimalistic and unique interior designs to the industry. Tesla interiors are among the first in the industry to have a steering wheel and a cut-down instrument cluster.
Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software Beta was released for the first time in 2020. It is now available upon request to anyone willing to pay. According to the company, it's in about 400,000 vehicles in the US. Tesla FSD, despite its name, is not a self-driving car. Teslas can automatically enter and exit highways and recognize traffic signals and stop signs.
Charge your batteries
The Supercharger is the fastest and most efficient way to recharge a Tesla. It's the closest thing you can come to a gas station-like experience. The company claims that the best Superchargers are able to add 162-200 mile range in just 15 minutes.
Users can find chargers on a map provided by Tesla. There are approximately 45,000 chargers worldwide today, a huge increase from the 10,000 in 2018.
Tesla Supercharger costs are charged on a per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) basis whenever possible. Tesla will charge per minute if they are unable to charge per kilowatt-hour. You will need to download the Tesla app on your smartphone in order to access the Tesla network if you are not a Tesla owner.
Tesla's destination charger allows users to charge their vehicles at places like hotels, restaurants, and malls. Destination charging, unlike Supercharging is more designed for overnight stops or to keep topped up when running errands. It's not meant to be used during short road trips.
Some methods are more realistic than other ways to charge a Tesla. One YouTuber used a Tesla powered by a generator to power his Model S on a 1,800-mile trip through the Midwest, without ever stopping to plug it in. Ironically, he did need to buy gas for his generator.
How long does it usually take to charge the Tesla at home? Installing a 240-volt socket, such as the type used for clothes dryers, can allow you to charge your Tesla in 8-10 hours. The Tesla mobile connector, which costs $230 and plugs into any standard outlet, can charge the battery up to 30 miles per hour.
Tesla offers a warranty on its batteries of eight years, or 100,000-150,000 mile–whichever comes first. Tesla batteries are expensive to replace. Elon Musk estimated the cost at $5,000 to $10,000 in 2019.
Compare EV competitors
Tesla isn't alone in the EV market. New competitors are popping up every day. Are any of them worth considering instead of a Tesla?
Polestar is a new electric car brand that's aiming to take some of Tesla’s success. The Tesla Model 3, which competes with the Polestar 2, is directly in competition. Tesla and Polestar are similar brands. They both have online ordering, simple interiors and a focus on performance. The Polestar 2 is more expensive and has a touchscreen that's easier to use.
Rivian is another Tesla competitor. Rivian will be competing with the Tesla Model X, upcoming Cybertruck pickup and R1T SUV and R1T truck. Rivian is the winner in this comparison between Tesla and Rivian. Rivian's brand, which is all about being outdoors, caters to buyers looking for a bigger vehicle with better off-road capabilities. Tesla's cars focus more on performance and are better for it, especially if you opt for a sportier version, such as the Tesla Model S Plaid.
Lucid, a promising EV start-up based in California, is a promising company. Peter Rawlinson was a former top engineer at Tesla. He is now the CEO of Lucid. Lucid's Air Pure, the entry-level model, starts at $87.400. Pricing for this model goes up to $249,000, which is the Air Sapphire – a super-powerful and speedy car. Tesla's Model S sedan would be the closest competitor in a Tesla-Lucid comparison, as it offers a lot of technology, impressive speed, and a huge range.
Future Products
Tesla fans have been patiently awaiting several future models. These include a pickup truck, semi-trucks, supercars, and a self-driving cab. These vehicles have been delayed for a long time.
Tesla's 18-wheeler Semi-truck is its first product beyond the passenger vehicle. Tesla released the product in 2017, and delivered its first semi-truck to Pepsi five years later, after many 18-wheeler production delay.
This year, the long-awaited Tesla pickup, called Cybertruck, will finally be produced. The body of the Tesla truck is based on an exoskeleton, which is opposite to how most trucks are produced and look.
The original Tesla Roadster, the first vehicle of the company, was a sports car with limited production. The release of the new Tesla Roadster has been postponed since its announcement in 2017. Tesla announced that the new Roadster's base model would cost $200,000 when it announced its return.
Some fans are confused about whether or not Tesla makes tiny houses. The company's product line does not include housing. Elon Musk, however, has talked about owning an tiny house made by the company Boxabl.
Musk is working on Tesla robots. Elon Musk revealed Optimus, a Tesla humanoid robotic system in 2021. Musk says it is intended to reduce the labor shortage and to keep workers safe. Optimus uses Tesla's Autopilot connected to eight cameras feeding its neural network.
Tesla Drivers
According to a study of drivers of various Tesla models, the typical Tesla driver is a man who is white and has a household annual income above $130,000. Tesla owners are more likely to have a home.
Insider asked more than a dozen Tesla car owners in 2023 what they thought were the best and worst things about owning their vehicles. The best features of Tesla, according to these drivers, were the cost, performance and technology. They also praised the Supercharger Network, home charging, and the Superchargers network. According to this group, the cons of Tesla ownership include a stiff ride and build quality. They also cite Elon Musk's association, customer service, and an association with Elon Musk.
Experts believe that Tesla's customer service complaints may damage the brand. Insider spoke with electric vehicle owners, who had mixed experiences. They said that they ranged from being frustrated to having a quick and easy experience.
Tesla insurance is more expensive than other car insurance, in part due to the high cost of repairs. Tesla launched a cheaper insurance product to compete with other insurers in 2019. It's available only in 12 states.
Tesla offers a tax credit for its Model 3 and Model Y cars. Other models by Chevrolet, Ford and Rivian are also eligible. Tax credits for EVs up to $7500 were introduced to encourage the production and adoption of electric cars in the US.
Tesla's cars are responsible for hundreds of deaths. According to the Tesla Deaths Database, which includes news articles and reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as well, 393 people died in incidents that involved a Tesla.
This figure is largely made up of accidents, DUIs and medical emergencies that could have happened in any Tesla. According to the reports in the online database, up to 95 people died while driving Teslas which caught fire or used the Autopilot function. Elon Musk's EVs are responsible for nearly one out of every four fatalities.
