The New York Times reports that Ukraine's digital Minister has expressed concern about the country's excessive reliance on Elon Musk Starlink satellite internet systems amid the war against Russia.
Mykhailo Fedorov, a reporter for The Times, said that Starlink is the "lifeblood" of Ukrainian communications infrastructure. The Times reported that Starlink satellites are the majority of the satellites orbiting Earth. The network is useful for accessing internet in areas affected by extreme weather or war zones.
Fedorov, The Times, told The Times that Starlink satellites are an invaluable resource, but he is also concerned about Ukraine's overdependence on them.
Starlink internet was not always available to help Ukraine with its war effort. Musk blocked Starlink access to the internet in Russian-occupied Crimea on September 20, 2022. The reason given was that there were concerns over escalation of the conflict. Musk asked the US Pentagon at the same time to pay for the internet service to Ukraine, as they were no longer able to afford it, Insider reported.
Mykhailo Podolyak, Ukrainian advisor to the president of Ukraine in February, said that SpaceX – Musk's company which houses Starlink – needed to choose a side against Russia when Musk announced Kyiv couldn't use Starlink for controlling military drones.
SpaceX has not responded to Insiders' request for comment before publication.
