According to reports, Elon Musk wants to create a rival to OpenAI's chatbot ChatGPT.
Musk approached AI researchers regarding a possible research lab. The Information reported that people with knowledge of this matter have already spoken to Musk.
According to the publication, the Tesla CEO has been recruiting Igor Babuschkin, a former DeepMind senior researcher, to lead the project. According to the publication, Babuschkin was a specialist in machine learning required for chatbot development. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has worked previously at OpenAI.
According to Babuschkin, he had left Google's DeepMind last Wednesday but hadn't signed up for Musk's project.
Musk founded OpenAI in 2015, which is the company behind ChatGPT. However, he left the company in 2018.
He has been critical of the AI company and viral chatbot in recent months. He has criticized some chatbot safeguards and called some responses "concerning."
Musk also expressed concerns about ChatGPT’s accuracy. Insider reported that Musk responded in December to an Alex Epstein tweet, an energy expert who had advocated for fossil fuels. He included what appeared to be a screenshot showing a ChatGPT response refusing to support fossil fuels. Musk stated that "it is very dangerous to train an AI to lie."
Musk has also expressed praise for OpenAI's technology, stating that ChatGPT was "scary great."
Babuschkin stated to The Information that he would like to "work with Elon" on something in the LLM area. This refers to large language models, which are the technology behind AI tools such as ChatGPT. He said that Musk was not aiming to create a chatbot that has fewer safeguards.
Insider reached out to Babuschkin and Musk representatives but they did not respond immediately.
