Airbnb Uses AI Technology to Crack Down on New Year’s Eve Parties

Airbnb Uses AI Technology to Crack Down on New Year’s Eve Parties

December 31, 2023 By Peter Leave a Comment

Airbnb is taking a firm stance against wild New Year's Eve parties by utilizing AI technology to prevent their occurrence. The company initially implemented a temporary ban on parties in 2020 and has since introduced various measures to curb them, as reported by BI. In 2022, Airbnb made the ban permanent and enforces it rigorously, particularly during holidays such as Memorial Day, Halloween, and New Year's Eve.

New Year's Eve Bookings Blocked and Enhanced Restrictions

For Memorial Day in 2023, Airbnb added additional restrictions to select one and two-night reservations. The company also blocked reservations that were deemed high risk based on the user's past ratings and their proximity to the booking location. Last-minute reservations were closely scrutinized as well.

In a blog post on December 18, Airbnb revealed that it prevented 63,550 New Year's Eve bookings in the United States, 13,200 in the United Kingdom, and 5,400 in Australia last year.

Proprietary AI and Machine Learning Technology

Airbnb announced that it will employ its proprietary AI and machine learning technology to thwart booking attempts for entire homes during the holiday weekend if they have the potential to result in disruptive and unauthorized parties.

Naba Banerjee, Airbnb's head of trust and safety, emphasized in the blog post that the company adopts a thoughtful approach to utilizing technology like AI. The objective is to benefit hosts, guests, and neighborhoods. Airbnb is optimistic that these measures will have a positive impact on the communities it serves.

Scope of Implementation

This AI-powered program will be implemented over the holiday weekend in multiple countries, including the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.

Factors Considered by the Technology

The AI technology evaluates numerous factors for each potential booking, including the duration of the trip, distance from the user's location, and whether the reservation is made at the last minute.

Airbnb will block certain bookings for entire homes that are one to three days long if they are categorized as high risk. Guests who successfully book an Airbnb locally during the weekend will be required to confirm their awareness of Airbnb's ban on parties.

These measures underscore Airbnb's commitment to maintaining the safety and tranquility of its communities, while also protecting the interests of hosts and guests.
