Amazon Delivery Drivers Set to Receive 7% Pay Raise Amid Unionization Efforts

Amazon Delivery Drivers Set to Receive 7% Pay Raise Amid Unionization Efforts

September 13, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Amazon has announced a significant investment of $2.1 billion to enhance the pay of its delivery drivers, a move that will result in a 7% pay raise on average. This initiative comes as Amazon faces increased unionization efforts among its delivery workforce.

Investment Details and Impact on Pay

The $2.1 billion investment by Amazon in its delivery service network includes pay increases for drivers. As a result, drivers' pay is set to increase to nearly $22 per hour, marking a 7% rise from the previous year. However, the actual pay raise will vary depending on the location of the drivers.

Significance of the Investment

In a recent blog post, Amazon highlighted that this investment represents the largest funding injection into the program since its inception in 2018. Over the past six years, Amazon has dedicated a total of $12.3 billion to the program, underscoring its commitment to supporting its delivery workforce.

Allocation of Funds

Out of the $2.1 billion investment, Amazon plans to allocate $660 million towards "rate card increases and bonuses," aiming to incentivize and reward high-performing teams within its delivery network.

Amazon's Approach to Delivery Service Partners

Amazon's delivery drivers are employed by third-party courier companies referred to as Delivery Service Partners (DSPs). The company emphasizes that it does not set driver pay rates but establishes minimum pay standards for its partners, thereby offering some flexibility in compensation.

Recent Challenges and Unionization Efforts

Recent months have seen Amazon confronted with renewed unionization efforts among its delivery workforce, along with scrutiny from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In light of two recent NLRB decisions, Amazon has been classified as a "joint employer" of workers at certain subcontracted delivery firms, sparking debates over its obligations to its drivers.

Concerns have been raised by DSP drivers regarding the demanding nature of their work and the pressure to meet stringent performance targets. Some drivers have expressed apprehensions about facing repercussions if they fail to meet these expectations.

Union Involvement and Response

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the US, has actively supported nationwide strikes involving Amazon workers, advocating for improved working conditions and fair treatment of employees.

Despite these developments, representatives from Amazon have not yet provided a comment in response to inquiries from Business Insider, submitted outside regular business hours.
