In its rush to distract from the legal charge of genocide against Israel in Gaza, the Biden administration is promoting its plan for the "day after." This plan, rooted in American hubris and ignorance, is doomed to fail. The United States is tying funding for Gaza reconstruction to a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia, but this ignores the reality of the situation and the parties involved. Biden's top adviser, Brett McGurk, is even recommending a victory tour for Biden throughout the Middle East to boost his election chances. But this plan is simply delusional and disconnected from the truth.
Biden's Ignorance of Israel and the Region
It is concerning that Biden and his administration are so ignorant of Israel, the Palestinians, and the rest of the region. The fact that National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan was unaware that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had already rejected the normalization plan is a sign of incompetence. This level of ignorance and willful blindness is unprecedented and should terrify us all.
Misreading Palestine and the Saudi Demands
Biden's alternative reality for Palestine is deeply flawed. The plan envisions a "reformed" Palestinian Authority taking control of the West Bank and Gaza, but this ignores the desires and needs of the Palestinian people. The Saudis, on the other hand, come out ahead in this plan and can afford to wait for conditions to be right for normalization. They have made it clear that a commitment to a Palestinian state is necessary for regional peace. The United States has failed to understand that the Saudis have plenty of time and no need to rush normalization.
Blinken's Incompetence and the Grave Concerns
Secretary of State Antony Blinken's incompetence is evident in his credulity and failure to secure promises from Netanyahu. This lack of critical thinking puts the whole world at risk. The tragedies and suffering in the Middle East must end, and it is up to the United States to lead the demand for change.
