In an interview with BBC, Gates said the remarks in Thursday's BBC interview. Amol Rajan, a journalist, asked Gates if he would encourage Tesla founder Elon to join the club of megaphilantropists. This refers to Gates, Warren Buffett and Jeff Bezos.
Gates stated that Musk was a "Yeah" and "I think someday he will be a great Philanthropist." Things like Tesla have a positive effect even if they are not philanthropy. However, other than going to Mars once or twice, I don’t believe he’ll want to spend the money on himself.
Gates said that he believes Musk will one day become a philanthropist by "using his ingenuity."
Gates responded to Rajan's question by saying that he didn't think going to Mars was a smart use of money.
He told BBC that it was actually very expensive to travel to Mars. "You can save thousands of lives by purchasing measles vaccines, which will cost you $1,000 per person. So it kind of grounds you.

They have spent billions of dollars on vaccine research, development, and delivery to the poorest nations. According to the foundation, it has spent billions of dollars on efforts to eliminate polio worldwide.
Along with French-Gates, Buffett, Gates also created the Giving Pledge. This is where some of the wealthiest people in the world have pledged to give most of their wealth away.
Musk, often ranked as the world's wealthiest person, signed the pledge in 2012. Musk signed the pledge in 2012. Bloomberg reports that the foundation distributed $160 million to beneficiaries in 2022.
Musk previously stated that it was difficult to find ways to give money that make a real difference. Vox reported that Musk had given 0.05% of his wealth away to charity in 2021.
In the past, Musk and Gates have been publicly at odds, including over COVID-19, climate change and space travel.
Insider reached Musk and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for comment but they did not respond immediately.
