Bluesky T-Shirt Sales Target CEOs Controlling Online Experience

Bluesky T-Shirt Sales Target CEOs Controlling Online Experience

March 14, 2025 By Peter Leave a Comment

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber made a statement by wearing a T-shirt that seemed to mock Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The company decided to make the shirt available for sale online, and it quickly sold out within just 30 minutes.

Bluesky's Stand Against Tech World Leaders

Bluesky is challenging the likes of Mark Zuckerberg in the tech industry. During the SXSW event in Austin, CEO Jay Graber sported a black T-shirt featuring a Latin phrase: "Mundus sine caesaribus" or "A world without Ceasars." This was seen as a direct reference to Meta's CEO, who had worn a similar black T-shirt with a Latin phrase comparing himself to Roman general Julius Caesar: "Aut Zuck aut nihil" or "Either Zuck or nothing."

Social Media Platform Ethos

Bluesky commenced selling the same shirt that Graber wore at the conference, and it quickly sold out. According to Bluesky spokesperson Emily Liu, the shirt embodies the ethos of the social media platform. Liu emphasized that Bluesky's democratic approach ensures that no single CEO or company controls users' online experiences, resonating with the vision of many.

Graber mentioned in a Bluesky post that the shirt sales began while she was on a flight and were already sold out by the time she landed. However, the company did not disclose the exact number of shirts sold.

Shift to Alternative Social Media Platforms

Following Elon Musk's takeover and Twitter's rebranding to X in 2022, some users have transitioned to alternative social media platforms like Bluesky. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, introduced its alternative, Threads, in 2023. This migration reflects a trend of online users seeking platforms that align more closely with their political and cultural beliefs.

Bluesky's Growth

Founded by Jack Dorsey in 2019, Bluesky experienced a significant increase in users post-election and had reached 30 million users by January, according to the company.
