- Gov. Ron DeSantis launched his campaign for 2024 with a Twitter Q&A.
- He was asked everything, from the government's reaction to COVID-19 to Disney feud.
- Donald Trump, his primary GOP opponent, was conspicuously absent from the discussion.
Gov. Ron DeSantis launched his presidential campaign for 2024 in a Twitter livestream. He discussed a range of topics, from the government response to COVID-19, to his ongoing feud with Disney as Florida Governor.
One topic that was left out was Donald Trump, DeSantis’s greatest opponent for the GOP nomination. The audio-only event was plagued with technical problems at the beginning.
During a nearly hour-long Q&A on Wednesday, David Sacks, Elon Musk, and a few others who seemed to be aligned with DeSantis, such as conservative radio host Dana Loesch, and Rep. Thomas Massie were brought in to ask questions to the candidate.
DeSantis answered questions about his battle with Disney, book ban controversy, and his position on digital currency.
But when it came to how he'll set himself apart from Trump, only the slightest-but-obvious reference was made to his rival when podcast host Steve Deace asked the governor about how he would handle immigration.
"We've heard it a lot in the past: 'Lock Her Up.' "Drain the swamp." 'I'm gonna build a beautiful fence.' Mexico is going to pay for it. "And crowds cheered and everyone loved it. Brands were built and nothing was done," Deace said. He was referring to some of Trump's most popular phrases and his Make America Great Again campaign.
Deace asked: "What is your bottom line assurance to those who are listening that you will actually implement the agenda you have just articulated, when others talked and tweeted about it but then failed to follow through?"
DeSantis' response did not mention Trump by name, but he said that he "shared this frustration."
DeSantis said, "I think that our voters are tired of empty promises. DeSantis stated that voters want to see results.
While the Q&A unfolded, Trump and his MAGA supporters taunted the governor via social media.
"Rob, My Red Button Is Bigger, Better, Stronger, And Works (TRUTH!) ), yours does not! Kim Jung Un of North Korea is soon to be my friend, according to my conversation with him! "Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Donald Trump Jr. tweeted "#DeSaster" during the technical problems of the live-stream event.
