Elon Musk claims that Twitter will soon be able to send calls and encrypted messages.

The billionaire announced the new features in a tweet on Tuesday: "Coming Soon will be voice and Video Chat from your handle to any on this platform. You can now talk to anyone in the world, without having to give them your number.

Musk did not give a specific date for the launch of "encrypted DMs Version 1.0", but he said that it should be launched on Wednesday. He predicted that the feature's sophistication would increase quickly.

Musk stated that "the acid test" was whether he could see his DMs if a gun were held to his head.

Twitter's CEO recently took a shot at Meta, which owns WhatsApp, a second encrypted messaging app.

Musk tweeted a screenshot of a user who claimed that WhatsApp had used his microphone while he was sleeping. Musk stated: "WhatsApp can't be trusted."

WhatsApp responded to the tweet by saying that it believed the problem was caused by an Android bug which misattributed information on the Privacy Dashboard. It had also asked Google to investigate.

Twitter announced earlier this week that it would start purging inactive accounts for the past several years, to make room for unused Twitter handles.

Musk responded to John Carmack's concern that the content of inactive accounts could be deleted by archiving the accounts.

Musk announced in December that Twitter would be deleting around 1.5 billion accounts to make room for new usernames. Musk said that the accounts to be removed were "obvious," because they "had no tweets for years" and had not logged in.

Twitter's automated response to a question about a comment was not a direct answer.
