- Elon Musk sent an email to the entire company in which he told them that he had to approve any new Tesla hires. This included contractors.
- Tesla's CEO has said that executives should "think very carefully" before sending Tesla a new employee.
- Musk's focus may be shifting back to Tesla now that he has a new Twitter chief executive.
Elon Musk has made a big change at Tesla. The CEO now wants to sign off on every new hire.
Musk said in an email obtained from Insider, "Think carefully before you send me the request." No one, not even a Tesla contractor, can join Tesla until I approve it via email.
In an email sent on Monday, the Tesla CEO stated that he wanted to "gain a better understanding" of the hiring process and asked executives to send him a weekly list of candidates for his approval. Electrek, an EV blog, was the first to publish the email.
Tesla employed about 130,000 people in the last year and increased its headcount by about 30,000. Already, the company's hiring processes are very competitive. The carmaker reported that it received more than 3.6 million applications in 2022.
Musk's strategy is not new. Musk sent an email in 2019 asking for the approval of any new hires.
Musk's email is only a few weeks after he announced that a new CEO would be taking over Twitter. The billionaire announced that former NBCUniversal Advertising Chief Linda Yaccarino would take over as Twitter CEO within six weeks and that he will shift to a CTO position overseeing the product on the social network.
Tesla shares rose on the news, and investors seemed to be celebrating the news that Musk will be focusing more of his time back on the electric-car manufacturer. Wedbush Tech analyst Dan Ives wrote in a report that Musk will be able to "finally remove the lingering albatross," when it comes down to running Twitter.
Musk became Twitter's CEO in November. Since then, Tesla shareholders have voiced concern about his attention to the social media company. Musk is sleeping at their headquarters. Recently, a number of Tesla investors sent an open letter stating that Musk was "distracted" from his other ventures. They called for him to be reined-in.
Tesla's spokesperson did not reply to an inquiry for a comment before publication.
Below, you can read Musk's entire email entitled "Hiring".
I'd like to better understand our hiring. I would like to receive a weekly list of hiring requests from the VPs.
Before sending me your request, please think carefully. You cannot join Tesla as a contractor until I approve your request.
Thanks,
Elon
