Neuralink reported Thursday that Elon Musk has finally received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for his company to begin implanting its brain chips into humans.
Neuralink was founded by Musk and announced on Twitter that it had received FDA approval for its "first-inhuman clinical study." The company said that "recruitment has not yet opened" for the clinical study, but they would be sharing more details soon.
Reuters reported that the FDA had rejected Neuralink’s request to begin human testing in March, citing a number of concerns which would need to be addressed first. The FDA was concerned that the wires on the brain chip could move or overheat.
Neuralink only tested its brain chips in animals so far, such as pigs and primates.
Neuralink claims its brain chips can help people treat certain medical conditions and complete tasks by using their minds alone.
