- Elon Musk stated Tuesday that Twitter would open source its algorithm next week.
- He said that although the algorithm may leave users "disappointed" at first, it will "improve quickly."
- Musk has expressed support for the idea in the past. This is ostensibly an attempt to increase transparency.
Elon Musk announced Tuesday that Twitter's algorithm would be open-sourced next week.
"Prepare for disappointment at first when our algorithm becomes open-source next week. But it will improve rapidly!" He tweeted on Tuesday in response to a user who claimed they would be "truly impressed" by the algorithm.
Open source is software or source code that can be viewed, modified and distributed by anyone.
Musk, who describes himself as a "free speech absolutist" but has polled Twitter users to make major decisions at Twitter has stated repeatedly that he supports open-sourcing the algorithm of the platform. This is, ostensibly, a step towards transparency on the platform.
He polled his followers in March 2022 about their opinions on open-sourcing the algorithm.
He tweeted, "I am concerned about de facto biases in the Twitter algorithm having a major impact on public discourse." "How can we find out what is really happening?"
Thomas Davidson, a Rutgers University sociology professor, and expert on hate speech online, previously stated to Insider that open-sourcing Twitter's algorithm could be a way for researchers to counter extremist speech, and help identify how it spreads.
Musk and Jack Dorsey have fought over Twitter's algorithm.
Musk stated last May that the default Twitter feed was manipulating Musk in ways he didn't know. "I don't think the algorithm is malicious, but it's trying guess what you might like to read and inadvertently manipulating/amplifying your viewpoints, without you realizing."
Dorsey replied that the default feed which displays tweets based upon popularity and user interests was "designed to save time when you're away from the app for a while."
Musk stated that "open source" is the best way to solve trust and effectiveness in a follow-up.
