Elon Musk Fires Tesla Supercharger Team After Refusing Further Layoffs

Elon Musk Fires Tesla Supercharger Team After Refusing Further Layoffs

May 16, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Elon Musk made a bold move by axing the entire Tesla Supercharger team when division chief Rebecca Tinucci resisted making more job cuts. Tinucci had already let go of 15% to 20% of her team when Musk demanded additional layoffs.

Backtracking on the Decision

Following the abrupt decision, Musk later reversed course and rehired some members of the charging team. This turnaround came after Musk dissolved the team responsible for Tesla's charging infrastructure in an email to staff on April 29.

One-on-One Meeting with Tinucci

Before the mass firing, Musk had a one-on-one meeting with Supercharger chief Rebecca Tinucci. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Musk terminated Tinucci's entire team because she opposed further layoffs.

Implications of the Layoffs

The layoffs were part of Tesla's efforts to navigate challenges such as declining sales and increased competition, particularly from Chinese automakers like BYD. The sudden move raised concerns among major automakers that relied on Tesla's charging technology, including General Motors, Ford, and Mercedes Benz.

Response and Reassurance

In response to the backlash, Musk assured investors and partners that the Supercharger network would continue to grow, albeit at a slower pace for new locations. This commitment was seen as crucial, especially considering Tesla's significant role in EV charging infrastructure and its alignment with President Joe Biden's clean-energy agenda.

Government Commitments and Plans for Expansion

Tesla's participation in EV charging awards from President Biden's infrastructure law highlighted the company's dedication to expanding the Supercharger network. Musk reiterated plans to invest over $500 million in creating thousands of new chargers this year, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
