  • Elon Musk reportedly plans an AI startup in the wake of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which sparked the chatbot craze.
  • He has been talking to investors at Tesla and SpaceX about supporting the startup.
  • Insider reported that Musk had hired AI experts and acquired graphics processing units.

Elon Musk is reportedly moving forward with a new artificial-intelligence startup. The frenzy surrounding OpenAI's ChatGPT prompted big tech companies, including Google and Apple, to compete and collaborate on chatbots.

Musk has received interest from Tesla and SpaceX shareholders looking to invest in the planned artificial-intelligence company, FT reported Friday, citing a source who was familiar with these conversations.

According to a Nevada filing, Musk was named as the director of X.AI Corp. in March. The Wall Street Journal first reported this.

Musk did not reply to email requests for comments sent to his Tesla or SpaceX email address. A response to a press inquiry sent to Twitter’s communications address was a poop emoji. This has become a standard response to media inquiries.

Kali Hays, an Insider reporter, has reported previously that Musk has hired artificial intelligence experts and purchased roughly 10,000 graphics processor units.

Musk's actions seem to indicate the considerable infrastructure and resources he appears to be dedicating to an undertaking that he has himself expressed concern about.

Musk, in March, signed an open letter urging the industry to stop developing "powerful" AI for six months.

"Contemporary AI is now human-competitive in general tasks. We must ask: Should we allow machines to flood our channels with propaganda and falsehood?" According to a letter published by the Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit organization. Should we automate all jobs, even the most fulfilling ones?

Microsoft launched in February its new Bing search engine with an AI bot, following the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. Microsoft has a multibillion-dollar tie-up to OpenAI.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new AI Model called "LLaMA" to aid research on AI-driven Chatbots. Google rolled out their own Bard chatbot to many users last month.
