  • Elon Musk painted the "w" in Twitter’s name onto the sign outside its San Francisco headquarters.
  • He claimed that Twitter's landlord had told them that the sign should read "Twitter" legally.
  • "So, we painted it background colour. Problem solved!" Musk tweeted Sunday.

Elon Musk seems to want the sign in front of Twitter's San Francisco headquarters to read "Titter" — and he is willing to pay some paintwork to make that happen.

The CEO of the social media platform posted a photo of the sign with the "w” painted in white over it in a tweet on Sunday. This was to blend in with its background.

Musk wrote in his caption, "Our landlord at SF HQ said we have to keep signing as Twitter & can't remove the 'w'. So we painted it background color. Problem solved!"

Musk's plan to change "Twitter", to "Titter", appears to have been in place for several days according to photos of the building that were uploaded to Twitter by multiple users.

William LeGate, an entrepreneur and programmer, tweeted a photo of the sign last Thursday. The "w" was obscured.

LeGate's caption said that Elon Musk had removed the "w", from Twitter's logo, in a remarkable display of maturity.

SRI Nine Market Square LLC, the building's landlord did not immediately respond when Insider asked why the original alteration was unacceptable and whether new, painted-over signage would still be permitted.

Since he assumed control of Twitter, Musk has made many drastic changes at the San Francisco headquarters. To increase income for Twitter, Musk tried to sell hundreds from his office, including kitchen appliances, furniture, Twitter sculptures, and office plants.

Twitter also cut janitorial services at its headquarters in December, forcing employees to bring their toilet paper to work.

The latest episode in a long-running feud Musk has with SRI Nine Market Square LLC, the landlord of the building, is the dispute over the Twitter sign. In January, the landlord sued Musk-owned Twitter. Twitter was accused of failing to pay rent for its headquarters on Market Street in December and January at a rate of $3.4 million each month.

Musk has been also tinkering on Twitter's interface. Musk last week replaced Twitter's bird logo by the Shiba Inu (or doge) mascot. Stocks of Dogecoin, the meme cryptocurrency Musk supports, shot up 20% after this change.

Insider reached Musk but did not receive a response immediately.
