- Elon Musk is the CEO of Twitter, SpaceX and The Boring Company.
- Musk will be the richest man in the world by July 2023.
- Musk is a divorcee three times and has had nine children. He has also dated celebrities.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is also the founder of SpaceX and other major companies.
He was born in South Africa in 1971. Musk's parents, Maye and Errol divorced in 1979. In the 1990s he co-founded Zip2 with his brother Kimbal and started a career in technology.
PayPal was formed when Musk's online banking venture X.com merged with a Peter Thiel startup. Musk earned $165 million when PayPal was sold to eBay in the year 2002.
Musk is now the richest man in the world. Musk is often trading places with billionaires, but his net worth as of July 20, 2023 was $239 billion. This puts him at the top. In November 2021, his estimated fortune reached $340 billion as Tesla shares surged.
Twitter
Elon Musk began buying Twitter shares in January 2022, and initiated the acquisition in April.
Elon Musk had spent months trying not to sign the contract before he bought Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion. He sent Twitter a letter at the beginning of July claiming to cancel the purchase. Twitter immediately sued him.
Musk fired a number Twitter executives immediately after the sale, including its CFO, CEO, and Chief Legal Officer. Musk gave an ultimatum in November: either work at a "extremely high" rate, or accept a 3-month severance. Musk would later lay off 80% of Twitter staff.
Musk announced his Twitter verification changes on November 1. He said that Twitter's current "lords and peasants" system of who has a blue checkmark or not is bullshit. He also added "Power to people!" "Blue for $8/month."
Musk will name Linda Yaccarino the new Twitter CEO in May 2023. Musk tweeted: "I look forward to working together with Linda to transform the platform into X, The Everything App."
Twitter changed its name to X in July 2023.
SpaceX
Musk founded SpaceX with $100 million from PayPal.
The company was on the verge of failure. The company was almost bankrupt after three failed launches between 2006-2008. On September 28, 2008 SpaceX became first private company in history to launch an orbital rocket. In the same year, SpaceX was awarded a NASA contract worth $1.5 billion.
Musk, reflecting nine years on the events, told CNBC that "fate liked us."
SpaceX launches are now happening on a regular basis. SpaceX publishes its launch schedule on their website. Launches are usually held at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base, or Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
SpaceX operates the Starlink satellite Internet system. According to the company, its satellites are in a lower orbit around the Earth, which reduces the delay between data transmission and reception. Musk has said that he wants to create a constellation with up to 42,000 satellites.
In 2019, the company launched its Starlink satellites. Today, there are more than 4,000 satellites orbiting in space.
SpaceX Falcon 9 is a two-stage rocket that can be partially reused. It's often used to launch satellites. The Falcon 9 rocket family is the first of its kind and has been a major asset for NASA since 2011, when the Space Shuttle program was retired. The majority of space-faring equipment, except for the Space Shuttles was single-use.
Musk's leadership style has amounted to valuing SpaceX at nearly $140 billion. SpaceX is a private company and therefore, it's not easy for the public to buy its stock.
The company has not publicly announced that it is planning to go public. Musk said SpaceX will not file for an IPO until the "Mars Colonial Transporter", as Musk calls it, is flying regularly.
SpaceX's goal is to colonize Mars at a reasonable cost.
The Boring Company
Musk's The Boring Company began as a SpaceX subsidiary and then became its own company. The tunneling venture was inspired by the gridlock in LA and has several projects underway on the West Coast.
According to a Boring Company press release, The Boring Company will complete Series C funding in April 2022. The $675 million was worth $5.675 billion. Boring Company shares are not publicly traded at this time.
Musk sold 20,000 flamethrowers from Boring Company in only five days. The product, called "Not-A-Flamethrower," has been off the market for years. It has gained a cult following among fans of the tech mogul, with some paying hundreds of pounds to buy them on eBay.
Musk has also announced a humanoid Tesla robot, Optimus. It will be available in 2021. Musk says the robot will help to reduce labor shortages and make workers safer. It may be a groundbreaking invention, but there is still a long road to travel before it can be produced and sold.
Elon Musk’s wife and children
Musk's wives are Justine Musk who he met while attending Queen's University, Ontario, Canada and Talulah, Riley whom he married back in 2010. He met Riley in a London bar. The couple then divorced, remarried and split again.
Musk and his ex-wife Justine had five children together during their eight-year marriage.
Musk may be dating someone, but it is not clear. Musk split up with actress Natasha Bassett last year, believed to be the last person he dated publicly.
Musk dated Amber Heard briefly in 2017, during her divorce from Johnny Depp. They first met on the Met Gala red carpet in 2016, which Depp wasn't expected to attend.
In 2018, he and musician Grimes began dating. They've been together and separated a few time since then. They appear to be just co-parents now of a boy named X and a girl called AE A-Xii & Y.
Musk had twins with Shivon Zilis, one of his top executives in November 2021.
