- Twitter and other major technology companies signed an EU agreement to combat disinformation in June last year.
- Politico reported that Twitter would pull out once Elon Musk approved the plan next Monday.
- EU officials have previously criticized Twitter for its poor compliance report with the code of disinformation.
Politico reported that Elon Musk would sign off next week on Twitter's plans to withdraw from a disinformation deal in the European Union.
Google, Meta and Microsoft, as well as TikTok, signed the EU code of conduct on disinformation in June last year.
This is a voluntary guide that includes such commitments as ensuring transparency in political ads and cooperating fact-checkers.
Although compliance with the code is not mandatory, it does help mitigate the Digital Services Act of the bloc which regulates social media companies. A company that violates these rules may be fined up to 6% its annual revenue.
Two people with direct information on the matter have told Politico that Twitter will end its participation in this code in the next few days. One of the two said that Twitter would officially withdraw from being a signatory as soon as Musk approves the plan officially next week.
In February, EU officials criticized Twitter for not providing a complete report on its efforts towards compliance with the code. According to the Associated Press, the European Commission stated that the other large tech companies had a "strong commitment" towards reporting compared to Twitter.
Last November, the company closed its office in Brussels that was responsible for ensuring compliance with laws within the European Union. The union has over 440,000,000 people.
According to the code of conduct, companies must also provide researchers access to platform data.
According to i, Twitter has instructed disinformation researchers to delete the data they have obtained through historic contracts before the end of the month unless they are willing to pay $42,000 a month.
The report by Politico comes 11 days after Musk's meeting with Emmanuel Macron. Macron is the French President who is currently promoting a business campaign called "Choose France".
Musk had been filmed in Cabo, Mexico, dancing in a nightclub. They discussed future investment opportunities in the country.
Twitter was contacted by Insider for a comment. Twitter responded to Insider's inquiry with an automated response.
