Musk conducted a poll on Sunday asking his followers if he should resign as CEO of the social network. Musk tweeted Sunday afternoon, “Should i step down as chief of Twitter?” “I will adhere to the results of this survey.” The poll was viewed by more than 17.5 millions people, with 57.5% of them voting for him to step down.
Musk responded to the poll by tweeting that “Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it” and “Those who want power, are the ones who least need it.”
CNBC reported that Musk announced Tuesday that he would resign as Twitter CEO. This was after CNBC first reported that he was searching for a replacement as head of the social media giant. CNBC reported that the search was ongoing even before Musk’s decision to resign, citing unnamed sources.
Musk’s reign as CEO of the social media platform has been marked by chaos and contradictions. Thousands of employees have resigned, been fired or were laid off. Over concerns about content moderation, advertisers have been flooding the site. Musk seems to have introduced new policies at will, some of which he later reversed.
Musk took control of Twitter in October and has been polling his users about various issues, including the reinstatement of former President Donald Trump’s account and the return of Vine, a video-sharing app. Musk used the phrase “vox populi vox dei,” which means “voice of God, voice of the people” in Latin.
Critics mocked him with this phrase and accused him of hypocrisy. He didn’t follow up on a poll where Twitter users voted for him to suspend accounts “who didxxed me exact location in real time.” Accounts such as @ElonJet which made publicly available information about Musk’s private plane and Jack Sweeney’s personal account remain suspended from this site.
Advertising boycotts, lawsuits, and an increase in hate speech
Musk, who had never had to run a social media platform before, experienced a dramatic two-month leadership role at Twitter. Musk has fired Parag Agrawal, the former CEO, and Ned Segal, the CFO, as well as employees who criticised him on Twitter and Slack. He also laid off thousands of workers in cost-cutting measures.
Musk issued an ultimatum for staff telling them to work hard and be intense if they want to remain at the company. According to Insider’s Kali Hays, around half of Twitter’s workforce did not agree with Musk’s vision for Twitter2.0.
Former Twitter employees have sued the company accusing it not to provide them with the severance packages promised and for laying off a large number of women workers.
Musk repeatedly pledged to support free speech on Twitter. Musk has disbanded Twitter’s Truth and Safety Council which was responsible for preventing harassment and has reinstated accounts that were blocked. Some users and activists claim that there has been an increase in hate speech since Musk’s takeover.
Some of Twitter’s most prominent advertisers have removed their ads from the platform amid concerns about content-moderation. This could increase pressure on Musk’s Twitter Blue subscription service. Users pay $8 per month for a blue check next their name, and get access to more features.
