Elon Musk has settled a lawsuit brought by a Tesla critic, who accused the chief executive officer of the electric carmaker of defaming his character.
Randeep Hothi said Monday that he had accepted Musk's settlement offer of $10,000 and one penny to settle his defamation lawsuit. He cited Musk's tweet from last year, in which the Tesla CEO said that he would "never give up/settle a case unjustly against us."
Hothi, in a Monday statement, said that the case was not about fame or money but rather taking a position. "I feel vindicated."
Musk, his lawyer, and a Tesla representative did not respond immediately to Insider’s email request for comments on Monday night.
Hothi filed his lawsuit in 2020 after Musk made comments to Aaron Greenspan who runs the legal information initiative PlainSite. Musk claimed that Hothi was violent towards Tesla employees in Musk's email.
Insider reported that Hothi and Tesla were at odds since Hothi took pictures of Tesla cars at their facility.
Hothi met a Tesla security officer on a particularly controversial occasion in 2019. The company then filed a restraining action against Hothi for these interactions, accusing Hothi of endangering Tesla workers by driving close to them. Hothi "vehemently denies" Tesla's claim that his car struck any Tesla employee.
Hothi claimed that Musk sent him an email at the time claiming that Hothi had "actively harassed", Tesla employees, and "almost murdered" them.
