- The letter raises concerns about misinformation, automation and the state of the labor market.
The AI industry's heavyweights call for an end to advanced AI development.
Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Evan Sharp, Pinterest's cofounder, and Emad Mostaque, Stability AI CEO, have signed an open letter from the Future of Life Institute. This non-profit works to reduce the existential risk posed by powerful technologies.
OpenAI's GPT-4 AI system is becoming "human-competitive at all general tasks" and poses a risk to society and humanity, according to the letter. The letter asks AI labs not to train any tech greater than GPT-4 until the risks of the new technology have been properly evaluated.
Industry experts Yoshua Bengio and Stuart Russell, a computer scientist who is often referred to as the "godfathers" of AI, supported the letter. OpenAI representatives did not appear to have signed this letter at the time of publication.
The letter raises concerns about misinformation spreading, automation risk in the labor market and possible loss of control over civilization. These are the main points:
AI that is out-of-control
Non-profit raises concern that developers could lose control of new AI systems and their intended impact on society. This suggests that companies are racing to develop AI technology that is so advanced that no one can "understand predict or reliably control it."
The letter stated that We could lose control over our civilization. These decisions should not be delegated unelected tech leaders.
A "dangerous race"
The letter stated that AI companies are in an "out of control race to develop new advanced systems and deploy them". OpenAI's ChatGPT became so popular that other companies have started to develop their own AI products.
The letter encouraged companies to take advantage of the "AI summer" while society can adapt to new technology rather than rush into an "unprepared Fall."
AI automation and misinformation
The letter warned of several dangers associated with the new technology, including the possibility for nonhuman minds to "outnumber, surpass, outsmart and eventually replace us."
It stated that AI systems are becoming human-competitive at certain tasks. The report also cited concerns about misinformation and labor automation. Do we automate all jobs, even the most fulfilling?
Six-month pause
Open letter asking for six months of rest from any development of AI systems that are more powerful than those on the market.
Developers are asked to collaborate with policymakers in creating AI governance systems. It also highlights the need for regulatory authorities and AI "watermarking" systems to distinguish between AI-made content and human-made content. It also mentions the need for well-resourced institutions to deal with the economic and political disruptions that AI can cause.
In the open letter, it was stated that the pause should be taken to avoid a "dangerous" race around advanced technology and not to halt general AI development.
