- Elon Musk has changed his display name from "Mr. Tweet" to "Mr. Tweet", and he says that he cannot change it back.
- This is a reference to an error made during the "funding secured Tesla trial".
- Twitter users complained that they were unable to change names in the past.
Elon Musk claims he has remained with his new Twitter name, "Mr. Tweet."
The recent update to the billionaire's name refers to a mistake made by a lawyer during a trial regarding Musk's tweets about "funding secured".
Nicholas Porritt, an attorney representing shareholders who sued Musk over his 2018 tweets accidentally called Musk "Mr. Twitter" during Monday's trial.
Porritt called it a "Freudian slip," while Musk laughed that it was "probably an exact description."
Musk now says he cannot get his old name back.
He tweeted Wednesday that he had changed his name to Mr. Tweet and Twitter wouldn't allow him to change it back.
Twitter users complained that their names were locked before.
Musk was contacted by Doja Cat, a pop star who had accidentally set her display name "christmas" to be locked.
She tweeted that she didn't want to be Christmas forever and asked for help.
A November report in The Verge stated that users who had been verified by Twitter under its legacy policy couldn't change their display names. This was in response to Twitter's paid verification that caused havoc for brands and public figures.
Insider reached Musk representatives but they did not respond immediately to the request for comment outside of normal business hours.
