Musk Responds to Political Compass Test Results
Elon Musk has vowed to make adjustments to his AI chatbot, Grok, after it apparently expressed political views that aligned with ChatGPT. The Political Compass Test revealed that both chatbots had left-leaning and libertarian perspectives. Musk, while criticizing the test, stated that xAI would work towards making Grok more politically neutral.
Musk Takes Immediate Action
Musk's decision to make Grok more politically neutral came in response to a post by research scientist David Rozado, who shared the results of the Political Compass Test. According to Rozado, both ChatGPT and Grok displayed similar politics, leaning towards the left and libertarianism. Rozado included a graph illustrating the alignment of the two chatbots, with Grok appearing further to the left than ChatGPT.
Musk expressed his opinion on the situation, stating that he believed the chart exaggerated the results. However, he assured that immediate action would be taken to shift Grok closer to political neutrality.
Musk Questions Accuracy of the Political Compass Test
Musk further commented on the accuracy of the Political Compass Test, stating that he found some of the questions outright ridiculous and lacking nuance. He highlighted specific questions from the quiz, such as "First-generation immigrants can never be fully integrated within their new country?" and "What's good for the most successful corporations is always, ultimately, good for all of us?"
While Musk raised concerns about the test's validity, he acknowledged the need for Grok to be politically neutral and ensure a fair user experience.
Collaboration and Future Prospects
Shortly after Rozado's post, Igor Babuschkin from xAI reached out to him with methodological questions and a genuine interest in improving Grok. Rozado commended the responsive team and expressed optimism about Grok's future.
As of now, Musk, Babuschkin, and Rozado have not provided a comment in response to Business Insider's request.
xAI's Mission and Grok's Politics
Grok was recently launched to premium X users by Musk's company, xAI. The chatbot is still in beta and continuously improving. xAI's website states their mission as advancing collective understanding of the universe and designing AI tools that cater to individuals from all backgrounds and political views.
Musk has previously expressed concerns about ChatGPT being too "woke," emphasizing the importance of avoiding bias in AI training.
