Tesla's 24-hour diner and drive-in theater is currently in the works in Los Angeles, with Elon Musk's company commencing construction in September 2023 after submitting plans to local officials. This futuristic Supercharging station aims to offer a unique blend of food and entertainment options to visitors.
The Development of the Project
Recent photos captured in the Los Angeles neighborhood showcase the progress of Elon Musk's ambitious project, initially hinted at in an X post back in 2018. What was once a bare dirt lot where construction kickstarted last September has now transformed into a two-story structure with a sleek metallic facade.
Alex Ingram, a former Tesla employee who previously served as the company's chief designer, shared video footage highlighting the ongoing construction efforts in April.
Key Features of the Diner and Drive-In Theater
While details about the project have been kept under wraps by the company, reports from Bloomberg suggest that the site will house a Supercharging station equipped with 28 stalls and two movie screens capable of accommodating over 200 individuals. These screens are expected to showcase short films lasting between 15 to 30 minutes, aligning with the average time required to charge a Tesla vehicle.
According to a project description cited by the outlet, guests will have the option to enjoy the movie screens either from a rooftop seating area or the comfort of their Tesla vehicles.
Elon Musk's Vision
Elon Musk first introduced the concept of this venture six years ago, envisioning it as an "old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant." The company filed for a trademark with the US Trademark Office in 2021 for the brand's use in restaurant services, with plans for the 24-hour Supercharging station in Los Angeles officially submitted in 2022.
In August 2023, Musk provided an update on the project, expressing that the Tesla futuristic diner, a blend of "Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharging," is slated to open later in the year in LA.
Immersive Experiences in a Post-Pandemic World
While Elon Musk's ventures span across various industries, the introduction of a diner and drive-in theater signifies his foray into the realm of immersive experiences. Amidst a landscape where in-person, interactive experiences are gaining traction post the COVID-19 era, Musk's initiative is set to resonate with consumers seeking unique entertainment avenues.
Notably, companies like Disney dominate the immersive experience sector with their theme parks and global brands. Nonetheless, other players are also striving to carve a niche in this domain. For instance, Netflix plans to launch Netflix House venues at two US malls next year, underscoring the media giant's shift towards engaging with fans in physical spaces rather than solely through screens.
While several Tesla charging stations already offer amenities such as vending machines and lounges, this project signals a potential shift towards transforming charging stations into sought-after destinations in themselves.
At the time of writing, representatives from Tesla are yet to respond to Business Insider's request for comments on the matter.
