- Elon Musk was recently asked by CNBC how he would guide his children in the AI era.
- Musk stated that finding fulfillment is difficult "if AI can do your work better than you."
- Musk, who has expressed concerns about AI technology in the context of many companies developing AI, has frequently expressed his concern.
Elon Musk, speaking to CNBC's David Faber on Tuesday night, expressed his concern over AI technology. He also reflected on the self-doubt he felt when confronted with its capabilities.
The Tesla CEO was then asked at the end of an hour-long conversation how he would encourage his children to pursue valuable career paths in light of the rapid development of AI technology.
Musk, who is the father of nine children, paused for a moment before saying: "Well that's a hard question. I guess I'd just tell them to follow their hearts in terms of what makes them happy or interesting, and to try to be useful to society as much as they can."
Musk said that it is difficult to find meaning and fulfillment in life if "AI can do your work better than you."
Musk claimed that AI would have advanced to the level of a "magic-genie", meaning it could be asked for anything.
Musk said, "If I really think about it, it can be demoralizing and dispiriting, because I have spent a lot blood, sweat, and tears building companies."
Musk also said that he has self-doubts about whether or not he should sacrifice time with his family and friends when AI is likely to be better at performing many tasks in the future than humans.
"Then, I wonder if I should be doing that?" Because if I sacrifice time with my family and friends, the AI will be able to do these things. Does this make sense? Musk said to CNBC: "I don't know."
Musk said, "I have to suspend my disbelief to some degree in order to stay motivated."
Insider reported that Musk, who has been building and recruiting for an AI project recently, has expressed his concern over AI technology, especially OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk was an investor and cofounder of OpenAI. He is no longer associated with the company.
Musk stated in an interview with Tucker Carlson last month that AI is "a danger for the public". He also stressed the need for government regulation. Musk's answer reflected the same concerns that workers and legislators have about this technology. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke to Congress on Tuesday, saying that the government should create an agency for AI development.
Musk's final advice to his children, and to those entering the workplace, was to do work that is useful to humanity.
Musk said, "I'd say do something you enjoy, that makes you happy, and make a contribution to society."
Musk has not responded to Insiders' request for a comment before publication.
