- On Blind, hundreds of tech workers debated Elon Musk’s position against remote work.
- Musk's comments on "laptop classes" were mocked by some tech workers.
- The billionaire said that "remote work" is "morally incorrect."
Elon Musk's recent rant on remote work and so-called "laptop courses" has not pleased some tech workers.
During an interview with CNBC, the billionaire sparked discussion on the anonymous social networking site Blind when he said that remote work was "morally wrong." He also claimed that "the laptop classes are living in a la-la-land" during the interview. Musk believes it is unfair that remote workers can work from home, but those who make cars and food must physically come to work every day.
Many tech workers, after Musk's comments, took to Blind in order to mock his billionaire status and call him a hypocrite.
"'Morally wrong?'" A Meta employee wrote in a topic on the subject that drew over 70 comments. It's also morally wrong for billions of dollars to be hoarded.
Users posted hundreds of comments on the site. The site requires users to verify their employment by using their company emails. They also created more than a dozen topics on the subject. A Rivian employee launched a poll that mocked Musk, and the majority of 480 users responded that Musk was wrong.
Insider has not independently verified the employment status of any users mentioned in this article.
Apple employee wrote: "In this case, flying privately is morally wrong because everyone else must fly commercial," in a reply to another blog post about the debate over working from home.
According to a college student who uses public data to track the jet, Musk's private plane was used more than 130 times in the past year, with several flights lasting less than 30 minutes.
Others on Blind have accused Musk of working remotely himself. They pointed out that Musk holds leadership positions in five different companies, some of which are located in states completely separate from his own. Musk has flown between SpaceX's Texas launch site and Twitter's California headquarters over the last year. Musk tweeted last year that Tesla was also covered, while he "worked and slept" at Twitter headquarters.
Some tech workers have tried to decipher Musk's logic, and one Meta employee called Musk's rhetoric "business play", to ensure that people continue to drive their cars to the office and buy new ones.
A Google employee wrote: "Landscapers must work in the heat all day. How dare we stay inside and use A/C!" Everyone should be forced to sweat in the heat and sun all day. Anything else is wrong.
Musk's comments were criticized by many tech workers, but some appeared to be in agreement with him.
The entitlement of my generation was sickening," wrote a worker at the online payment service company WePay in a blog post that received over 85 comments. It's sickening that your gardener, plumber and grocery store employee cannot all work from home, yet you insist on it as a "right". Put on some jeans for the love of god and get off your high horse.
Musk hasn't been against remote work for the first time. He told Tesla employees to either return to work full-time or quit last year. He also called Twitter staff into the office.
Some employees have chosen to quit rather than return to work, while other tech companies have taken similar measures to attract workers.
Musk has not responded to an advance request for comment.
