From Corporate America to South Korea: A Freelancer’s Journey

From Corporate America to South Korea: A Freelancer’s Journey

October 16, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Chen Teng made a bold decision to leave her corporate job in New York City and start a new chapter in South Korea back in 2016. What was initially planned as a two-year adventure has now turned into an eight-year journey of self-discovery and growth.

Feeling Trapped and Taking a Leap

Feeling constrained and suffocated in her digital marketing role in corporate America, Chen Teng decided to break free from the monotony and challenge herself by moving to a different country. As a native New Yorker with Taiwanese roots, Asia had always held an allure for her, and the timing felt right to make a significant change in her life.

A Leap of Faith to Seoul

Despite not knowing anyone in South Korea and being unfamiliar with the Korean language, Chen Teng took a leap of faith in 2016. Her decision to move to Seoul was based on a gut feeling and a positive impression of the culture and cuisine she experienced during a brief vacation. The transition from the bustling streets of New York City to the vibrant city of Seoul was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking for her.

Apartment-Hunting Adventures

Upon settling in Seoul, Chen Teng embarked on a challenging journey to find the perfect living space. As a freelancer and model, she sought a cozy apartment with abundant natural light, modern amenities, and convenient access to public transportation. Despite facing initial reluctance from some landlords due to her foreign status, Chen Teng persisted and viewed over 30 apartments before discovering her current home near Mok-dong.

A Loft-Style Haven

Chen Teng's studio apartment in Seoul features a unique loft-style design, with distinct living and sleeping areas. While the ceiling height poses a minor challenge, the space offers her a comfortable retreat in the bustling city. Paying $640 in rent each month and a deposit of 10 million Korean won, Chen Teng enjoys the convenience of her neighborhood and a vibrant workspace by the windows.

Embracing a New Lifestyle

Transitioning from the fast-paced lifestyle of New York City to the dynamic environment of Seoul was a significant adjustment for Chen Teng. Through government visa programs and her outgoing nature, she quickly built a network of friends and acquaintances in her new home. While missing out on significant events back in the US, Chen Teng has embraced the life she has created in South Korea and remains open to new possibilities.

Reflecting on the Journey

Despite the challenges and occasional homesickness, Chen Teng has no regrets about her decision to pursue a freelance career in South Korea. The freedom to set her schedule and explore her interests has brought her a sense of fulfillment and purpose that she couldn't find in her corporate job. As she continues to evolve and grow in her adopted country, Chen Teng remains grateful for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped her unique journey.
