From London to Tokyo: A Bartender’s Journey

Londoner Holly Graham embarked on a journey across Asia, starting the day after she turned 24. Her diverse career path led her from teaching in Thailand to writing in South Korea and bartending in Hong Kong. However, it was her move to Tokyo in her mid-30s that presented the challenge of running a cocktail bar with her husband.

Discovering a Passion for Bartending in Hong Kong

After teaching English in Thailand, Holly found her true calling in Hong Kong's vibrant bartending community. Working as the food and drink editor of Time Out Hong Kong, she immersed herself in Asia's cocktail scene and felt a sense of belonging she had never experienced before.

A Shift in Focus

With a background in hospitality since her teenage years, Holly decided to transition back to bartending full-time. She took on the role of managing editor at DRiNK Magazine Asia while honing her bartending skills at The Old Man Hong Kong, a renowned establishment that later claimed the top spot at Asia's 50 Best Bars 2019.

Transition to Japan and Tokyo Confidential

Holly's journey led her to Japan, where she co-founded Tokyo Confidential, a cocktail bar in the heart of the capital. Despite initial hesitations about leaving Hong Kong, Holly and her husband recognized the opportunity for growth and decided to take on this new challenge.

Challenges of Establishing a Business in Japan

Transitioning to life in Tokyo posed unique challenges, from navigating bureaucratic processes to overcoming language barriers. Despite the hurdles, Holly remains dedicated to elevating Tokyo's bar scene and fostering a community of passionate bartenders.
