- According to the BBC, Elon Musk tried selling Twitter's office plants for staff.
- Musk has been trying to reduce costs and increase the company's income since he took over the site.
- Musk has previously sold office furniture.
According to an anonymous engineer speaking to BBC, Elon Musk attempted to convince Twitter employees to purchase its office plants as part of his attempt to increase income.
Because he is still employed by Twitter, the BBC did not name the engineer. He said that Musk was primarily focused on money at the company. He claimed that Musk had fired his catering and cleaning staff.
According to BBC, the engineer stated that "there are so many broken things and nobody taking care of them, that you see this inconsistent behavior."
Insider reported previously that cockroaches were spotted in Twitter's New York Office. Workers said they noticed the smell after Musk refused to renegotiate contracts with facilities maintenance workers who clean the space.
In October, the tech mogul purchased Twitter for $44Billion. Since then, he has taken drastic measures to try and cut costs and save Twitter from bankruptcy. Musk stated in November that Twitter lost more than $4 million per day.
Musk took measures to lay off thousands of employees – Twitter's workforce was roughly cut in half within a few hours of taking over the company. He also reduced his free food.
According to a lawsuit, Twitter was sued for not paying some bills. This included millions of dollars in rent for the San Francisco headquarters. Twitter was sued by another company, alleging that it owed $390,000. This included T-shirts and socks, stickers, and a "swag box" for Musk.
Musk has also tried to increase the company's income, while reducing costs. Musk stated that Twitter saw a drop in revenue after it was taken over by advertisers. Financial filings reveal that advertising was responsible for almost 90% of the company’s total revenue in 2021. According to The Wall Street Journal, Twitter's revenue in December fell by 40% compared with the same month in 2021.
Musk has restructured Twitter Blue, the $8-per-month subscription company, to generate more revenue than advertising. Musk has also used unconventional methods to raise funds: He auctioned hundreds of pieces of Twitter's office furniture including statues, office chairs, industrial kitchen equipment and coffee machines.
Twitter didn't immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment regarding whether it had sold its plants to employees.
