Investigators have made a startling discovery in the tragic incident involving the sinking of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's superyacht off the coast of Sicily. The bodies of five individuals were found in the same cabin, shedding light on the events that unfolded on that fateful day.
Details of the Tragic Discovery
During a press conference held on Saturday morning, Bentivoglio Fiandra from the local fire rescue service disclosed that the bodies were located in a specific cabin of the yacht. The vessel had tilted, prompting the individuals to seek shelter in their cabins, leading to the heartbreaking discovery.
Prosecutors Launch Investigation
Prosecutors wasted no time in launching a manslaughter investigation in the aftermath of the sinking. Ambrogio Cartosio, the head of the public prosecutor's office of Termini Imerese, revealed that they are exploring a "crime hypothesis" related to culpable shipwreck and manslaughter.
The Fateful Day of the Sinking
The 184-foot superyacht, named The Bayesian, met its tragic fate on August 19 off the coast of Porticello, Sicily. Among the casualties were Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who were on board with friends and family to commemorate Lynch's recent legal victory in a fraud trial.
Loss of Prominent Individuals
The sinking also claimed the lives of other notable individuals, including Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, as well as Christopher and Neda Morvillo. Christopher Morvillo, in particular, was Lynch's lawyer and a partner at Clifford Chance.
Tragically, the only crew member to lose his life in the incident was the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas.
