The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have deployed their new Eitan Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) in combat against Hamas in Gaza, marking the vehicle's first missions in real-world battle. The Eitan APC, equipped with Israel's latest defense technology, carries a crew of three and can transport up to 12 soldiers. Though it was initially scheduled to enter operational service in the coming year, Israel fast-tracked its deployment to join the fight against Hamas in the ongoing siege of Gaza.
Eitan APC Takes Part in Gaza Operations
A recent photo released by the IDF showcases the distinctive-looking Eitan armored vehicle in action during Gaza operations on November 5. An IDF spokesperson confirmed that the Eitan APCs are actively engaging on the ground in Gaza, demonstrating their versatility, high mobility, and firepower across various terrains.
Advanced Technology and Capabilities
The Eitan APC, developed by the IDF, is an 8×8 wheeled armored personnel carrier designed to replace the aging M113 APCs currently in service. Drawing on advanced technology from the Merkava tank series and Namer armored vehicles, the Eitan offers superior protection, flexibility, and lethal capabilities. Its modular design, weighing between 30 and 35 tons, features a V-shaped hull that enhances protection against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Additionally, the Eitan is equipped with the Iron Fist active protection system, which provides 360° coverage and handles multiple threats using electro-optic sensors, radar, and a reaction suite.
Impressive Firepower and Speed
The Eitan APC is armed with a 30mm turret, a remote weapon station with a 0.5-inch heavy machine gun, and a pintle-mounted 7.62mm machine gun. It can achieve speeds exceeding 56 mph, making it a formidable asset on the battlefield. The vehicle's high level of protection, lethality, and flexibility have been commended by Lieutenant Yotam, an Eitan commander, who highlighted its significant contributions to ground forces during combat operations.
The Eitan APC: A Symbol of Strength and Advancement
The Hebrew word "Eitan" translates to "strong," a fitting name for Israel's new APC. The first units to train on the Eitan came from the 50th Battalion's Sayeret Nahal, a special forces unit within the Nahal Infantry Brigade. Despite the vehicle's recent introduction, soldiers have been adapting to its capabilities since September. With its advanced technologies and robust design, the Eitan APC represents a significant upgrade for Israel's armed forces, ensuring they are equipped with the most advanced defense equipment for all combat scenarios.
Israel's ground invasion of Gaza, coupled with an intense aerial bombardment campaign, is a response to the Hamas terror attacks that occurred on October 7, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people. As the conflict continues, the deployment of the Eitan APC demonstrates Israel's commitment to maintaining a strong defense and protecting its troops on the front lines.
