- Linda Yaccarino, Twitter's CEO, is now in her second month under Elon Musk.
- She wants to boost staff morale, as they have been afraid of losing their jobs despite working long hours.
- The recent "Tea Times" were the first gatherings of staff since Musk's takeover last year.
Linda Yaccarino makes an effort to get acquainted with some of her Twitter staff.
According to sources familiar with the event, Elon Musk hand-picked the Twitter CEO in early June. Since then, he has held two gatherings for Twitter employees. The events, dubbed "Tea Time", were casual all-hands gatherings and only took place in person. Yaccarino held a Tea Time at Twitter's New York City Office this past week after having hosted the first Tea Time a few weeks earlier in San Francisco.
Yaccarino is Yaccarino’s first CEO position. She was a senior executive at NBCUniversal and ran the large advertising division. She is primarily responsible for advertising at Twitter, although she was unable to work on deals during her first weeks as CEO because of a non-compete agreement with NBCU. Musk, however, remains in charge engineering, technology, and products.
Yaccarino's leadership style is beginning to be felt on Twitter. Her Tea Time gatherings were created in part to encourage Twitter employees to work. Musk and Twitter's management team are trying to convince the remaining employees to work full-time in the office, according to Insider.
One person familiar with the company said that while Musk has been using a culture of fear and threats against people's jobs for months, often when they are working 80+ hours per week, Yaccarino tries to build a team spirit and a sense camaraderie. The morale of Twitter has plummeted under Musk. In his seven months as owner, Musk has fired or laid off 90% of Twitter's employees and continues to dismiss people at random every month, according to a person familiar with the company.
It may not be the most exciting event, but a person familiar with it in San Francisco described the event as casual and "upbeat". This was the first group activity at Twitter after Musk took control. Twitter used to host many group meals and outings before Musk took over. The company also hosted an annual corporate retreat called "OneTeam", which was for the whole company. Last year, they planned to go to Disneyland. This trip was ultimately cancelled due to Musk's takeover.
