- Threads has a great start to its battle against Twitter.
- Meta has launched an app called Threads before.
- It launched one to compete with Snapchat in 2019. The new Threads is a markedly different version.
Mark Zuckerberg has taken aim at Elon Musk’s Twitter.
Meta's Twitter clone Threads was launched on Wednesday. It is being touted as one of the most significant threats to Musk’s volatile platform.
It's not the only Meta app to use Threads.
Meta, when it was still known as Facebook launched Threads, an app in late 2019. App was made for Instagram, but was also aimed at rival platforms. Snapchat was the main rival in 2019.
It was primarily used for instant messaging and photo sharing. It was marketed as an "app that puts the camera first" and worked in a similar fashion to Snapchat. Users could send photos, videos, or text messages.
Threads, despite its revamp in 2020, failed to gain mainstream acceptance and was shut down officially in 2021. Direct, a similar messaging app that had the same goal, was launched in 2017. It shut down in 2019.
The new Threads application has been under development since January, and it already seems to be significantly different from the previous app of the same name. Text-based, the app has shifted its focus to public conversations rather than private messages. Many see this as an attempt to lure Twitter users away.
On Wednesday, the desktop version Threads allowed users to briefly access early profiles for companies and influencers. The format is similar to Twitter, but with a different background. They also have an extra link to Instagram.
Zuckerberg claims that Threads attracted more than 10,000,000 users in its first seven hours.

Recent Twitter turmoil makes Zuckerberg’s death blow attempt all the more relevant.
Musk announced last week that he would be imposing new time limits for users to stay active on Twitter. This was his latest in an erratic series of business decisions. This rule change irritated users, particularly those who depend on Twitter for their job or to promote their own brands.
Many people are hoping that the new Meta app is a stable and viable alternative to Twitter. Elon Musk’s chaotic management in the last 12 months has alienated many users, and led to the launch or revival of several copycat apps.
As Insider's Hasan Chowdhury pointed out, Zuckerberg is known for his business acumen when it comes identifying successful platforms and integrating those concepts into Meta apps.
Instagram stories, which were heavily inspired by a similar Snapchat function, have outperformed the original competitor. Instagram reels also seem to be a copycat of TikTok, although they haven't been as successful.
Threads is off to an exciting start.
