If there's a body part that can wear AI, there's a 'good chance' Meta has tried to develop it, CTO says
Exploring Wearable AI Technology
Meta's Reality Labs is delving into various wearable AI technologies, according to CTO Andrew Bosworth. The projects under development include camera earbuds and mixed-reality goggles. Reality Labs, known for its work in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), has also faced challenges such as budget cuts and staff layoffs.
The Future of Wearable Technology
The rapid evolution of wearable technology is paving the way for integrating AI seamlessly into our daily lives. Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer, envisions limitless possibilities for incorporating AI into wearable devices. He mentioned in an interview with Command Line, a tech newsletter, that Meta's exploration spans across different parts of the body.
Reality Labs Innovation
Bosworth heads Reality Labs, the Meta division responsible for creating VR and AR hardware and software. Recently, the division introduced Orion, a cutting-edge pair of augmented reality glasses designed to provide users with an immersive AR experience while offering the comfort of traditional-sized glasses. Bosworth hailed Orion as a revolutionary piece of technology within its domain.
Challenges and Innovations
Despite facing financial difficulties, Reality Labs continues to push boundaries and explore new concepts. The division has initiated cost-cutting measures, requiring hardware teams to reduce spending by nearly 20% over the next few years. Additionally, there have been layoffs targeting managerial positions. However, these challenges have not deterred Reality Labs from pursuing innovative projects.
From Concept to Release
Reality Labs follows a meticulous process in developing products, starting from the conceptual stage to the final release. The journey begins with a pre-discovery team that prototypes new ideas, followed by a selection process to identify concepts for further development. Successful prototypes then move into the product roadmap, with around half of them reaching the final testing phase before being launched to the public.
Ongoing Projects
Among the projects in progress, camera earbuds are in the early stages of development, while a pair of "steampunk" mixed reality goggles has advanced to the product release phase, as reported by Command Line. Bosworth emphasized the importance of staying ahead in wearable technology innovation and not being surpassed by competitors.
Meta has not provided a comment on the matter in response to Business Insider's request for a statement.
