- Mark Zuckerberg's Threads app is likely the best-positioned to bring down Elon Musk’s Twitter.
- Other platforms have tried to take the perch of bluebird, but with only mediocre success.
- Two billion people can now start expressing their ideas in a space other than Twitter.
You make it seem too easy, Zuck.
Meta is slated to launch its new competitor to Twitter — an application called Threads — in July. It's a perfect timing, as it comes just after Twitter has essentially become the antithesis to doomscrolling.
Twitter's rate limits have caused people to look for another text-based platform where they can air their wit and woes.
There is already a group of apps that are vying to become the Twitter Killer. Mastodon, Bluesky (an invite-only app), and the Truth Social of former President Donald Trump have been touted as new refuges for Twitter users who are upset about something — be it censorship or Elon Musk's decision to turn blue checks into paid services.
No one has been able to achieve the explosive growth that is needed to slay the bluebird. Mastodon's daily active users will be between 1.3 and 2.5 million, while Twitter has 237.8 millions. TruthSocial, Bluesky and other similar platforms are essentially absorbing opposing factions in a free speech schism. They run the risk of creating echo chambers on the right and left.
Mark Zuckerberg's team has created a system that is designed to facilitate a mass Twitter exit — this time, not because of grievances but rather, the app forcing you to quit using it. This will lead people straight into Threads.
Threads is a likely free service that should link directly to Instagram. This means most people won't have to create an Instagram username in order to post. Meta's past performance suggests that the sign-up should only require a few taps of one's smartphone.
Screenshots from the Threads app interface reveal that it will suggest accounts to follow based upon your Instagram history, compared with existing rivals who will plop into a sea full of posts by pundits that you don't know and force you to start building a social network from scratch.
Threads' biggest advantage is the amount of Instagram users already on board, which will be two billion in 2021.
Meta's ability to convert Instagram's success into a wild success on Threads remains to be seen, as comparing textual and visual social media is not exactly apples to apple.
Meta's biggest strength is its sheer size. In 2023's first month, Meta will have at least 3,02 billion users per day using its apps, be it WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram.
Social media giant also saw success with app copies. Morgan Stanley's recent study of 2,000 participants found that Instagram and Facebook Reels – Meta's version of TikTok – were increasingly viewed over the past year. The study found that at least 74% (of 2,000 people surveyed) of Instagram users had used Reels in April.
Instagram Stories, which is similar in nature to SnapChat and was launched just three years ago, has been viewed by more than 500 million users daily.
Meta's chaotic redesign has led them to hint that they are going after Twitter and Musk. Chris Cox is Meta's chief products officer. He has said that Threads was a response from creators and public figure who were looking for a platform which would be "sanely managed."
Musk responded to Meta's Sunday jab, likely in reference to Zuckerberg. He wrote: "Thank goodness that they are so sanely managed."
