OpenAI Execs Express Concerns About Sam Altman Before His Removal

OpenAI Execs Express Concerns About Sam Altman Before His Removal

March 9, 2024 By Peter Leave a Comment

Recently, two executives from OpenAI voiced apprehensions regarding Sam Altman before his abrupt departure, as reported by The New York Times. The publication highlighted the significant role played by the company's chief technology officer, Mira Murati, in the unfolding events. Altman swiftly resumed his position as CEO within days, leaving a trail of unanswered questions in his wake.

Details of the Situation

Following Sam Altman's sudden removal and subsequent reinstatement as CEO of OpenAI in November, new information has surfaced regarding the circumstances leading to these events. The board of OpenAI cited a loss of confidence in Altman's leadership abilities and highlighted issues with his communication transparency as reasons for his initial ouster. However, the vague explanation provided by the board only served to intensify curiosity and speculation surrounding the incident.

Key Revelations

According to sources cited by The New York Times, Mira Murati, the company's chief technology officer, expressed concerns about Altman's managerial approach to the board in October. Murati also directly addressed Altman through a memo, contributing to the decision to remove him from his position. Following Altman's departure, Murati assumed the role of interim CEO for a brief period.

The report by The New York Times further disclosed that Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and chief scientist at OpenAI, also raised issues with certain board members regarding Altman's leadership. Concerns were raised about potential departures of key executives if action was not taken against Altman.

Upcoming Investigations

WilmerHale, a law firm, is in the process of conducting an investigation into the events surrounding Altman's exit and subsequent return. The findings of this inquiry are expected to shed more light on the situation. Despite requests for comments from Business Insider, OpenAI, Murati, and Sutskever have not provided immediate responses.

Statement from OpenAI

In a statement to The New York Times, an OpenAI spokesperson emphasized the support for Altman's return from the leadership team, including Murati. The spokesperson highlighted Altman's effectiveness as a CEO, his receptiveness to diverse perspectives, problem-solving capabilities, and concern for his team.

Murati, in a response to the Times, denied claims made in the article and emphasized her positive working relationship with Altman, characterized by open communication and constructive feedback exchange. Similarly, Sutskever's attorney refuted allegations that he raised concerns to the board.

It is worth noting that a correction issued on March 8, 2024, clarified Sam Altman's position at OpenAI as the CEO, not the CTO. Additionally, Murati's denial of the Times report was posted on X on the same date.
