Artificial Intelligence Takes the Political Stage
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gaining traction on the international political agenda, with leaders and policymakers around the world increasingly focused on its implications. US President Biden recently issued an executive order on safe, secure, and trustworthy AI, while G7 leaders have agreed on Guiding Principles and a Code of Conduct for AI. The UK is also hosting the first global AI Safety Summit. However, not everyone is convinced. Over 100 civil society organizations, experts, and campaigners argue that the summit is a "missed opportunity" that fails to include the communities and workers most affected by AI.
Examining the Politics and Policy of AI
A recent special issue of the Review of Policy Research delves into the politics and policy of AI, shedding light on the complex questions and challenges that arise in this evolving field. The issue brings together nine research articles that explore how collective decisions and policies around AI are made, how priorities are set, and how power is distributed among different social groups. By examining the politics and policy of AI from various angles, the articles aim to spark an open debate and explore alternative views, interests, and values.
Challenging Power Structures and Addressing Injustices
In a departure from the traditional approach, the special issue starts by focusing on the effects of AI on disadvantaged, marginalized, and vulnerable groups, such as migrants and minorities. This shift in perspective aims to challenge established power relations and hierarchies, while also addressing structural injustices. The articles then zoom in on AI policy at national, regional, and global levels, examining socio-technical imaginaries, changing policy paradigms, and the narratives of key players. The issue concludes with a discussion on global AI standard setting and the need for global indicators.
Looking Ahead: Implementing AI Policies
While much attention has been given to policy rhetoric and commitments in recent years, the special issue highlights the importance of analyzing the implementation of adopted AI policies, standards, and regulations. This avenue of research will help determine whether declared priorities are effectively put into action. As the field of AI continues to evolve rapidly, ongoing research and attention to the politics and policy of AI will be crucial.
